Hello i just finished N5 Grammar but i still have N5 vocab , should i move on to N4 grammar during this time now or is it better to continue doing N5 vocab and review the current grammar srs i have learned and then after i am done with both vocab and i grammar i then move on to N4? Sorry if it’s an annoying question but i hope anybody who has experience in learning before tell me since i am lowkey lost, thank you in advance😊
I wouldn’t say there’s any one right way to do things. If I were you, even if I was unfamiliar with N4 vocab, I would still go and have a look at some of the beginner N4 grammar points and read the example sentences too, and see how comfortable you are with the amount of new vocabulary in them that you haven’t seen before. If you’re comfortable learning those new words as you go, then starting N4 grammar won’t kill you. If you’re not, wait for your vocab to catch up and work on consolidating your N5 grammar first.
Considering a lot might be very unfamiliar though, I’d take the N4 grammar a bit slow so that you can take the time to understand some of the new words in the example sentences too.
Personally, I prefer to learn words before grammar, which is why I’ve almost finished N3 in vocabulary (via Anki, not Bunpro) but am only just at the end of N4 in Bunpro’s grammar. This is just what I find most comfortable though.
After a little trial and error, what’s worked for me lately is to slowly add N4 material after getting fairly comfortable with the N5 material. When the reviews for N5 started getting longer apart I knew it was time to add N4.
The way I’ve approached it is to start with N4 grammar. I did this by adding 10 lessons a day until I completely added the book. Then I again waited to add N4 vocabulary until the reviews started getting further apart. The reason I have done grammar first is because vocabulary is so immense that grammar reviews seemed to get drowned out by vocabulary reviews otherwise.
So now I’m adding N4 vocabulary at a rate of thirty per day. And even then I sometimes will wait a couple days between lessons if I start to get overwhelmed with RL (or Wani Kani which I’m also doing). I feel this approach is helping me to learn the material without getting in over my head.
