How do I express strong desire for something?

How can one express strong desire in Japanese

‘I really wish that I could blah blah’

Stronger, more emphasis than just たい form.

I asked ChatGPT and it said したいのに expresses this - I couldn’t find any explicit reference on BP or in my grammar textbook so I guess it’s using に as the big pointer in the sky expressing THIS! is the thing I want to emphasis.

I mean I can easily say, ‘本当に何かをしたい’

can I use ~てたまらない?

今夜は面白い何かをしたくてたまらない

sorry for the lazy stream of consciousness post

I believe that the どうしても grammar structure probably works great for the nuance you’re looking to convey. The ‘no matter what it takes’ translation is really good for showing strong desire.

Ah! Thank you. Had completely forgotten that one (yeah I have studied it :man_facepalming: )

Another good option could be 絶対(ぜったい)! I use this one quite a lot actually, probably more than とても or どうしても.

今夜、死ぬほど何か面白いことをしたいなああ。

I like this one a lot too! It’s nice because “dying to do something” is an expression in English as well.
