How do I write 興味 in English?

I’m not sure if I am encountering a bug or just totally burnt out and missing something incredibly obvious, but I can’t seem to write 興味 correctly. I’ve tried Kyoumi, Kyomi, Kyōmi, Kiyoumi and others.

I’ve just started Bunpro but have been using WK for 3 years and can’t figure out if I’m missing something.

kyoumi should work. Does it not?

Nope, it says that is incorrect. Thank goodness, I was beginning to think I had fried my brain but it must be a bug.

oh. That is what you meant. I believe the review type you are doing there is asking you for the English translation. Which would be “interest” “curiosity” “zest” etc. I can’t recall if the words in brackets are necessary for reviews of this nature.

Bunpro automatically converts romaji into kana when they are looking for the pronunciation of the word, but that would usually be in the reverse order where you are given the word in English and need to type it in Japanese. Those types of reviews look like this.

edit: reset my 興味 progress and changed my queue order to beginner first to test it in live review and yes it is expecting the English translation, and the words in brackets do not seem to be necessary. you can tell it wants the translation because it does not show it to you before you input your answer.

Ah! That makes a lot of sense, thank you!

I’m used to the WK system which doesn’t mark the answer as wrong if you input the pronunciation, when you were supposed to input the definition. I will need to adjust my expectations for Bunpro.

I really appreciate your response, I was honestly so confused.

If you switch to using a hiragana keyboard for your Japanese answer, I believe it prompts you when you’re using the wrong language.

Glad I could help. One useful tip to remember while you’re still learning to adjust to the differences. You can hit the backspace key to undo any wrong answer. If you accidentally type the pronunciation again you can just undo the answer and type in the correct one. It’s one of the differences that I personally love. No more losing progress due to silly typos or mistakes like that. Just remember that with great power comes great responsibility. Don’t abuse it and it’s really useful. Welcome to the community and have fun :tada:

This happened to me before and I filed a bug report and the person that responded typed back like I was stupid and didn’t give an explanation. :sob:

(Glad I’m not the only one).
