How popular is Christianity in Japan?

I think there must be some Christian community in Japan, but how large is it? What denominations (whether Catholic, Orthodoxy or Protestantism) are the most common among Christians in Japan?

Also, does one use plain form or polite form when praying to Jesus Christ? In my native language, you use informal language, because God is viewed as being close to you.

I mean it’s definitely a very small minority but you can find churches easily especially in the main cities. I have seen both protestant and Catholic establishments, but again they are so rare and most Japanese people don’t really know the difference anyway. Also there is always Christian people who give out information about stuff too you will see around big stations or crowded areas.

As for the praying stuff not a clue, but if God is real then he is the same in Japan or in your home country so I don’t think he is going to be mad if you don’t speak to him formally in Japanese lol

My little church has about 8 regular members. We use keigo to address God/Jesus.
Prayers will start like this
天の父なる神様
天のお父様
恵み深い天のお父様
and will finish like this:
イエス様の御名みなによってお祈りをいたします。アーメン。

Christians make up just a little over 1% of the population in Japan.

The history of Christianity in Japan is definitely interesting. I recommend anyone read up on it if they’re not familiar.

In regards to praying, Japanese Christians use honorific language (尊敬語 - そんけいご) when speaking to God, and humble speech (謙譲語 - けんじょうご) when talking about themselves to God.

In my Orthodox Church, they use keigo of course but also English, Ukrainian and Romanian in parts.

It’s not big at all however.

I live in an average sized city outside of Tokyo (~2 million population). I go to the only Catholic church in town. Typical attendance is about 40, and you maybe get double that during special events like Easter. Many of the members are not native to Japan.

Do you live in Japan/plan on moving here? Or just curious overall about Christianity in Japan?

Jesus is buried in Japan.

I think the best would be to say a little of both. I don’t want to spend the rest of my life in Czechia at all.
