How to get started on vocab without combing through a bunch of words?

I’ve been using Anki and making my own cards for quite a while, but I’ve recently been thinking to change to Bunpro vocab instead, since the cards make you use the words in context. But I’m a little overwhelmed because I’m going to have to comb through a lot of words that I already know. I’m thinking of starting with N3 because I’ve learned all the N5 and N4 words according to some other lists, but I might have missed some. I’ve also learned a couple hundred N3 words already (though I still don’t know most of them).

Do y’all have any suggestions on the most efficient way to do this? I’m aware of the “mark as mastered” button, but 1. I might have to navigate to it a bunch of times, and 2. I’m not really sure if I can confidently say I’ve “mastered” words (maybe ideally they’d be somewhere like in “seasoned”). Thanks for the help!

I’ve been using the “Set Default Progress Level” setting to achieve something like this, but I am interested in a way to go through and mark many words quickly.
Been on and off with learning for a few years now, and decided to recommit with bunpro during this sale. First time posting on the forums, so if anyone knows more I’d love to know:) どうぞよろしくお願いします

I switched from Anki to Bunpro vocab about half a year ago. I first went through them manually and marked every single one as I thought which fitted my level best, but this was really exhausting and at one point I just reseted them and did them all from the beginning, using the the by kosamu mentioned “Set default progress level” to level 4. I then did a larger amount than I would normally do with new vocab and caught up pretty quickly without overloading my reviews. I mean, I still had to go through lots of vocab I already knew, but it got tricky here and there because I had to write some words for the first time ever.

I also tended to waste my time with ‘optimising’ my Anki cards, so this didn’t seem like a waste of time to me.

With that said, I did realise that I learned new vocab faster with Anki and the words tend to stick more, but that it’s become easier for me to use the words with Bunpro fill-in reviews. My problem is that there are no English-to-Japanese flashcards to go through the words quickly and then use them in a sentence, which is more efficient for me. You might want to test how good this system works for you before making rapid changes.

I really can’t think of an option for how to avoid going through the words again, though. You could also keep your Anki and just start learning new words on Bunpro. When you already have the word in Anki, mark it as mastered and move on. You’ll most likely see the words with context while immersing one day.

I was in a similar position. I used Skritter and wanted to switch to Bunpro, but I had ~8000 words on Skritter.

If you can get a list of the words you have you can create your own deck. Create a custom deck and use the deck import tool, and Bunpro will do a decent job of finding 90% of words. I think it’ll be much easier than combing through each word, or you could relearn everything with a high level of starting SRS.

I only used this approach to transfer my personal decks to Bunpro, but it was pretty effective. Otherwise 6,000 of those words were the Wanikani list.
