How to search for specific vocabulary words and example sentences?

Hello!

I have been trying to see if there is a way to search through the provided example sentences on Bunpro.

For example, if I wanted to see sentences using the word “昇進”, is this possible at this time? I tried a few search bars on different pages and nothing like that comes up.

Thank you!

I don’t think there’s a way to do that as of yet.

If you want another resource to look up Vocabulary & Sentences, here’s one : JPDB.io

For vocabulary and kanji in particular, I like to use Jisho.org or takoboto. They’re both pretty good at finding words and linking to example sentences, but the big thing for me is searching by radicals. Say I saw the kanji 炎 but couldn’t copy and paste or read it, then I could just go select the 火 radical and search for kanji with that in it. It helped me a lot when I was reading physical light novels and picture translate wouldn’t work lol.

Hey! Welcome to the forums :sunglasses:

We have plans to completely revamp the Search feature in the future, and this will very likely include searching for content directly within Example Sentences.

Sit tight, and hopefully we’ll have it out pretty soon

I’ve been searching for ways to find example sentences definitely written by real people (not LLM), and stumbled across this old topic.

It would be nice if search across Bunpro’s example sentences saw light of day.

Of course search engines are available as a backup option (e.g. site:bunpro.jp うさぎ), but a dedicated feature for this can be much more useful.

For example, I was looking for sentences with ものの. I think it’s a on the complicated side for the search because of possible instances of 物の etc.

A dedicated search result could functionally look something like jpdb’s result:

Just a long list of example sentences that I can immediately search through further with browser search, for example for るものの or たものの, to narrow it down to what I’m looking for.

Similar with jisho using jreibun data set. Compact searchable list, unfortunately not nearly as long, have to click through pages.

The workaround search engine search is nothing like it:

Only 5 pages down the search results do I find the first example sentence (that’s shown in the snippet). Search snippets include furigana inline, which has both pros and cons.

Bunpro has a great sentence database, and an ability to effectively search it would be very educational.
