How to study

So, I just recently started using Bunpro. Right now, I am using Wanikani (Lvl 10 currently, for kanji and vocab), bunpro (for the grammar tools and for vocab), and started migaku a few days ago (so I can memorize vocab as words that appear a lot in shows.) Is this too much? How should I manage it? Any tips would be helpful, thanks

The only way is to speedrun to N1 in one year because you are ‘built different’

Jokes aside, welcome to the bunpro community, my advice is to take is slowly and not burn out. see how much time you can dedicate to learning japanese daily.
start by doing 3 new lessons a day and 5 new vocab a day. normally on the long run this will result with you having to clear 30 reviews a day for grammar and 50 vocab review for vocab (+ your new lessons / grammar) which can be cleared within an hour imo.

after you are settled in this routine (you constantly get the above numbers daily) you should adjust based on the time you have in your hand (if you feel overwhelmed reduce the number of new stuff you learn, if you are confortable increase the number of stuff you learn).
Migaku is a tool that will accompany you while you are immersing in japanese, so I would say you can either focus on the vocab you add on migaku and stick to it or do your vocab on bunpro and not use migaku. You must have ONE app and only one where you learn and review your vocab else the SRS doesn’t make any sense.

The best way to enjoy the process is to implement it to your daily life so that it feels natural for you to spend one hour studying japanese, just like it feels natural for runners to go for a 30mn run daily. People who runs the marathon didn’t start with running 42km straightaway, they searched for their own pace and built their routine thanks to consistency. It’s the same for language learning !

I was so worried at your first sentence hahaha
I totally agree with your process, best thing is to enjoy the journey, it’s not a sprint.
I’ve seen too many people burn out, me included but I’m rebuilding healthy and achievable study methods into my day now.

Good luck OP and be active in the forum, lots of super helpful and motivating people here who will help with your queries

Welcome,

my largest piece of advice for anyone starting with Japanese is to not speedrun it. I used to learn Japanese for almost a year and a half and got close to N3 Japanese.

I then got impatient and decided to speedrun Japanese. How did it end? I had a two years long break from Japanese. That is a burn out. I’ve recently got back to Japanese by the way.

Totally agree regarding speed running, I get why people might want to do it but learning a language is not an easy task.

People who like running sprints: :skull:

It’s totally ok to like sprints or speed running but it’s not for everyone, and the majority of people who I have seen in the internet that have started off with a speed running but have regretted it because they either burn out or lack retention and recall.

If you can speed running but and have success with it then that’s great, I genuinely am happy for those types of people, it’s just not for me

I’m kiddin)
It’s rather more about distribution of time than about learning Japanese so I’m washing my hands of here :raised_hands:

Unless it’s for something work, and even then, figure out a way to keep it fun as you progress. Know when you can hit the gas a little, or just coast through. Build a solid foundation, and learn what’s practical versus what’s textbook. Oh and don’t forget to ask for help, but take advice with a grain of salt from most people, everyone’s style is different.

The problem I have with speedrunners is that they cannot keep to themself that they are speedrunning japanese, they post their progress as if it was Strava awaiting for Kudos for their outstanding ‘‘performance’’… I’ve never seen someone studying japanese at a sane pace brag about it and post a backlog on forum it’s a very ‘‘speedrunner thing’’ which I can’t understand.

Posting your journey is fine, but speedrunners often have fast progress so they manage to post it every day.
