Huge Vocab Update, Feb 17/2022

Hi there, and thanks for the message! Sorry for the delay in N3 going up. It is all ready to go, but we are currently making some adjustments to the way that we approach vocab on the site, so there may be a short delay before it goes online.

I would like to say that it can go up within the next few weeks, but cannot promise :zipper_mouth_face:. I will do my best to get it online asap .

それでわ、それから、そう、そうです、そうですね、そうして、そちら、それに and similar words all being in the deck at around the same time is driving me around the bend. Instead of my little brain having time learn one and move on I get stuck in a recursive loop of failed reviews between them until eventually I luck up or write the answers down just so I can get through the review cycle. It’s… disheartening.

Not expecting a solution because I know it’s in beta. But wanted to voice my frustration.

Hello,

I just recently opted in to the beta, and am hoping to quickly go through the N5 and N4 vocab decks and mark all words I know as known, and study and add anything I don’t know to my reviews (the WaniKani sync is a nice feature, but certainly isn’t all-encompassing).

Would it be possible to add the <> arrows to the vocab items so you can easily flip through them like you can when browsing grammar points? Or alternatively, add the “I know this!” button during lessons, before you get to the quiz part? Or whatever you guys would see as being the best solution. As is, it’s a bit tedious going through lessons all the way through to the quiz part and marking them as known then, or clicking in and out of each vocab item.

Definitely not urgent and shouldn’t be a priority (on top of the fact that’s it’s in beta in the first place), but if it’s easy enough and you guys have time, I, and I assume some other users as well now and in the future, would benefit from and really appreciate something like this!

Thank you!

Is the plans for different vocab decks in the future? Such as the 1000 most used words etc.?

Currently using Torii and always looking for ways to consolidate the amount of resources I’m using.

Good question! We plan on eventually adding lots of different features to the decks, such as frequency, category (nature, politics, art, sport, work, etc), pronunciation, etc etc. There are not 100% solid plans right at this moment, but once all of those categories are made, we may simply let users make their own decks, based on desired study criteria, such as frequency.

Sounds great, a streamlined process for bringing the SRS to current levels of other SRS would be great to, but I understand this would be really difficult to do without the API.

Sorry for necromantizing this thread.

I’ve started adding words that I’m really struggling with in my Anki to the BunPro SRS, and there’s only 1 thing that bothers me. It is the lack of pitch accent information in the review card. I know that for some/most vocabulary (if determinable) the information is on the info page, but unfortunately not when I review my answers. Would it be possible to include it when reviewing?

After answering the review, whether correctly or incorrectly, you can instantly pull up the Vocab’s info by pressing ‘f’. (Or, equivalently, there’s a Show Info button just above the input box.) And in the info, in the Details box, there’s the pitch accent information along with the reading.

This is assuming you’re using the website. If you’re using the mobile app, I’m not sure if the interface is the same or not.

For other keyboard shortcuts, there’s a little Hotkey Guide button that looks like: [:keyboard:].

It’s already here!
On the vocab page review type is on the right side.
select ‘fill in the blank’.
I think the update means this is newly available for N4, and was previously only available for N5

I already know that, but thanks anyways. It would be 2-4 extra user actions to get that info. I wanted to ask to make it more accessible.

I mentioned this to the dev guys that setup page display etc. It shouldn’t be too hard to do, just checking where it will fit within our current design.

We discussed it a bit (and have done so in the past) and while we’re not going to refresh the review UI right this second to accommodate potential things like pitch accent, word type, etc. we should have something ready to go for when vocab gets out of beta. I know that’s not the answer you wanted to hear but unfortunately time is tied up in other designs and projects right now, sorry!

No worries. Prioritise your work how it will be most efficient for you guys. Knowing that you will work on it eventually is good enough for me.

I’ll keep your name on file so that when the time gets closer I can reach out and get any early feedback and ideas about what you think would look good, be functional, etc. Truthfully not many people have ever brought this up before so it’ll be good to get some actual user data to help support whatever we have planned~ :surfing_man:

Not sure if you have a list of people to run user tests on, but if you do feel free to add me to that as well!

Warning, I work in UX research and design so I may give a lot of feedback :stuck_out_tongue:

We usually just put any new changes inside the Beta program so that all users can comment at the same time. Occasionally we’ll reach out to people individually during the ideating stages if a need arises, but not super common. Your comments will be much appreciated though whenever we throw something new in Beta! The team has been honing in on UX elements in particular this past year to try and freshen up current & past releases as the site grows, so anyone with history w/ UX is greatly appreciated! :man_scientist:

You guys are starting to woo me away from finishing my pre-made Anki deck, especially with features like this :eyes::

I have two questions:

  1. Will there eventually be a feature where I could import a word list and they would all be marked as ‘known’ in Bunpro? It would be even better if it integrated directly with Anki to get this list (Migaku does this so I think Bunpro could do it too because Bunpou-chan is my hero)

  2. Will there be a way to sort the learning order by frequency? I am less concerned with learning toward the Japanese proficiency tests and more focused on learning the words that are most frequently used in day-to-day life.

Thanks for the incredible work guys, with this update I’m starting to change my tune toward the vocab side of Bunpro :slightly_smiling_face:

Edit: I’m a big dweeb and didn’t see the year on the original post. Oh well, what I said still stands. I’m still impressed and I would love to get answers to those questions.

Right now you can already sort Decks by their frequency by hitting the deck setting and then scrolling down a bit. Revamped vocab search page will come somewhere down the line with the ability to sort items by their frequency instead of solely through decks. We already have all the frequency data in there, just need to fine-tune the other sectors. Will probably also have custom decks for each major frequency list that’s automatically sorted from highest freq to lowest. Not sure on the exact details, but I imagine a lot of learners will find use out of that depending on what their preferred list is.

Regarding the first question - I think I know the processes you’re referring to. I can’t really speak too much to the future and the technicalities behind it, but we’ll do our best to support any type of progress importing that we can. Anki integration by itself can be a little tricky depending on how you’ve set your fields up (it’s always been a PITA for me personally) but the teams already discussed it a bunch so I’m hopeful we can get it going. For anything beyond that like custom word lists, we’ll see what the scope of those entails and where it fits into the general timeline. Obviously a big factor in people switching over from their current vocab-tool of choice to Bunpro will be a seamless transfer of progress so we’ll do the best we can to get 'er done :male_detective:

also don’t sweat responding to a 2 year old thread, i’ll stealth edit the title to be Feb 17/2024 so you look like you’re one step ahead of the curve
