Huge Vocab Update, Feb 17/2022

As feedback, I’d prefer that the vocab not be in alphabetical order. It’s been very difficult to learn multiple words with the same beginnings/prefixes all at once. For example それ, そうor ど words. They’re especially difficult when they’re not nouns/verbs that can be more easily pictured in my head. Having really learned one, then when the next one comes up later I’d have more space in my head to see/understand the differences.

I know one can hand pick what is learned but with such large vocab lists that would take quite a bit of time.

Oh god why did I click

without considering what “a lot” might mean. Kinda expected a prompt or cancel button, i just gained nearly 20 levels… Vocab rewards far too much XP, can just repeat myself. At this point I am not sure if it should reward any at all (dont think it needs to) and I fear the XP gained by vocab can now never be removed again xD
Well, this certainly is one way to falsify the amount of grammar I already studied here

This is exactly why I don’t want to click the sync button  How much xp is it per vocab? I would expect it to be significantly less than each grammar point

I am not sure, but seeing how much this gave me i would expect its the same as if you had 1 grammar point and leveled it from SRS 1 to SRS 12 (per vocab), seeing by how many thousands and thousands of XP this gave me  Anyways not well solved. Maybe they should have just left the XP deactivated for vocab during their beta-introduction altogether to save us me the frustration :see_no_evil:

Edit: My XP actually doubled going by badges I received yesterday and have right now, so yeeeah, this gave me like 95k XP XD

It’s only 10 percentage, as the scale goes +1 / +2 / +3 / … / + 12 for vocab and +10 / +20 / +30 / … / +120 for grammar

Ah thanks for letting me know! Makes sense. It probably leveled ALL WK Vocab and not just the ones I am supposed to know at my current WK level then.Went from 95k Bunpro XP to 190k in 1 click  I am not sure that this is the intended outcome

You still get 78 points per word, and it marks any words you know at any stage of SRS, so it would only be 1295 words, so not that crazy all things considering!

Fair! Just underwhelmed most of my Bunpro level is from random vocab words now I feel I have known for multiple years. I dont wanna be annoying about this but I really hope they remove vocab XP or separate them from the normal grammar XP. Its not as if I care a lot about them but was a nice thing to see rising/keep track of to see how your grammar studies really influenced it over time.

I am lucky I reset my WK level 56 or whatever it was from a few years ago back to low levels or this click would have done a lot more :joy:

This is amazing! All the work you guys have been putting into Bunpro lately is wonderful, and much appreciated.

Is there a shareable estimation on when the vocab decks and reviews might be officially released? I’m on the fence on whether or not I should opt in to the beta version, as I am really looking forward to this feature.

Thanks!

Two big things we aim to do before fully releasing vocab are:

  1. put all 20k or so words we have into the database and
  2. make it possible for you to make your own decks of words (and potentially share those decks).

Right now, that might happen as soon as the end of April, but more likely won’t come until sometime in May.

This is very impressive stuff. Is there any talk about importing Anki decks from users into Bunpro?

I really like the extra context sentences that you have for words. I’d love to squeeze them in there with my existing Anki deck, but alas…

I’m sorry if I’m bothering by asking this question, but do you have an idea about when the JLPT N3 Vocab deck will be added to the beta ? :smiley_cat:

All of the example context sentences for the (2000) words that will be in N3 were finished literally today . So, once we do the processing side of things, add furigana etc etc, I would assume that they will be available within the next 10 to 14 days at the absolute latest.

That’s awesome !
In 13days I’ll be finishing the N4 deck… I couldn’t have hoped for better :smiling_face_with_three_hearts:

I think we might be able to support that in the future but one of the huge downsides of anki (and user generated cards in general) is the lack of uniformity in card content. I think we could support it but it might be a bit of work on the user’s end to draw the correct lines between Bunpro words and the anki cards (when our auto parse fails to find a match).

That’s a fair compromise. I’d love to have all my content in one area. If Bunpro can achieve that then that would be a huge net win.

Not sure if this was mentioned, is there a way to have both
English > Japanese
and
Japanese > English
while doing Vocab reviews, or if this may be added in future?

I know they mentioned rather early on (in the first thread, so I doubt I’ll be finding it) that being a possibility that they’d like to add, though no idea when that’ll happen. I imagine right now getting out the N3-N1 vocab is higher priority

Probably a stupid question: If I want to add all words from the N4 and the N5 decks, how do I do that? I couldn’t find an obvious way to do that…

Not to put on any pressure or anything, but since I finished N4 vocab a couple of days ago I was wondering where things are at regarding N3 vocab. It’s totally fine if you’re prioritizing other stuff, just want to make sure this is not some kind of error on my end :innocent:
