I finished the deck. I am preparing for N5 which is in this dec. My plan is solve mock tests on migii jlpt and let srs do its magic. I also use wanikani. Do you have any recommendations?
Sounds like you are ahead of the curve - if you’ve got all your N5 vocab and grammar in your SRS queue and you’re already getting used to the format of the test then I think I’d recommend two things:
-
Keep slowly trickling in new information from N4 - not enough for it to be overwhelming, but don’t stop learning new things. N4 builds on N5 so continuing to push yourself will help you feel more confident when the test comes around.
-
Identify concepts you struggle with when you’re doing mock tests and practice them in non-JLPT formats. Oftentimes the thing that prevents concepts from clicking is a lack of relevant context.
If you’re really struggling with a grammar point in the exam setting, find lots of example sentences that use it, try writing your own sentences and having someone review them for you. If the listening portion is hard, watch lots of N5 level conversation videos on youtube. Basically, try to identify your weak points and spend whatever extra energy/effort you have available to really drilling them in a variety of contexts.
Any idea what your weakest area is? I used the Shin Kanzen Master series for N2 and I’m using it again for N1 this December, but I don’t believe there’s an N5 version of it. If you feel like your reading needs work, graded readers might be worth looking into. If you feel like your listening is worse, I’d try to find something aimed at N5-N4 level and do a lot of listening. I think there’s a Nihongo con Teppei podcast that caters to this, as one example. Sounds like you already have a system going for grammar/vocab/kanji, so I’d work on either listening or reading depending on what your weak point is to get more practice with the way the grammar/vocab/kanji that you’ve learned combine to form longer texts. I’ve messed with migii a bit, and while it’s probably a good way to get used to the format of the test, I wouldn’t put a ton of trust into it (it’s AI slop).
My bad, I only finished grammar deck. I’ll keep working on vocab deck. Also, thank you for advices.
Solved my first mock test on migii jlpt 5 minutes ago and I got 115/180. I think I have to focus on my vocab and grammar. I’ll take a look at the podcast and the book. Thank you!
