Immersion tips

Can anyone recommend a free immersion service to use to watch Japanese content with Japanese subtitles.

There’s a great channel on YouTube called “YUYUăźæ—„æœŹèȘžPODCAST” where a Japanese native by the name of “Yuyu” talks about various topics only in Japanese using a clear voice and uses words that are all commonly used words. There is a playlist on his channel that has a collection of podcasts that are accompanied fully with subtitles and even furigana for readers to read along with while they listen. He covers many interesting topics that contain many words and phrases that I have found to be very useful. It is also possible to practice shadowing his voice to get the hang of various intonations to build a native accent. Hope this was helpful! Much love <3

You could use YouTube. Many YouTubers have their own subtitles and the automatically generated ones aren’t too bad either.

Caption Pop is a good website that’ll give you recommendations for Japanese Youtube channels that have JP subs and lets you watch them in the browser which you can see in the picture below:

If you’re wanting to watch anime, there is a website for it which claims to be “legal” due to their website being (self-proclaimed) non-profit and for education purposes, but still, I don’t see how it is. Either way, the website is animelon if you’re interested.

It’s not a service per se, but something I started doing recently is watching/listening to native Japanese stuff with live caption turned on.

Android: I looked for (and turned on) “Live Transcribe” in the settings of my phone. You’ll need to set it to work with Japanese. It’s basically using your microphone so you could technically use it with content you watch on your TV for example, too.
Personally, I use the app “Pocket Cast” to play a podcast (“The Real Japanese Podcast” or “Shiku Hakku American Life”) and I look over the transcript while listening if I feel the need.

Windows: I looked for (and turned on) “Live Captions” in the settings. You’ll need to set it to work with Japanese. It will caption any media playing. It’s useful to have the captions on the same screen rather than using the phone.

Hope this helps a bit

What about movies and TV shows

You can find subtitle files online which can be matched with downloaded videos. I don’t do it so I can’t tell you how so just give it a Google.

Abema has a good selection but has no subs (I think). Maybe you need a VPN for this if you are outside of Japan - I don’t know. I am not sure if it limits how much you can watch - I’ve only ever used it to watch football.

Netflix (Japan) and Amazon Prime Video (Japan) both have good selections and have subs. You will need to pay to use them and will need a VPN to access them if you are outside of Japan.

I was looking for something like free

animelon has anime with japanese and eng subtitles and you can turn both or one or the other off if that’s what you’re after. They don’t have that much anime but they have enough to get you started

Unfortunately, anything with movies and TV shows uploaded in full for free is probably very much illegal, and I’d imagine you’re very unlikely to find much with Japanese subs.
