I’m sure that it is just counter productive to get seen N3-N2 sentences where I only understand the target word, but not the surrounding context.

Honestly, I profit a bunch, even from the high level sentences. The way I do it is to read through the sentence, if it’s way too hard, I just focus on the highlighted word, trying to treat it like a simple flashcard. When I reveal the translation, I parse through the japanese sentence and try to match some of the words and grammar. Gives you just this bit of extra immersion. Those unknown words and grammar points will pop up into my learn queue anyway, so by then they won’t be completely new. I think it’s a good feature

We’ve discussed a system where we rank each sentence on the JLPT scale, and allow users to set a level they’re comfortable with seeing.
This is hard tho because:
A.) At earlier levels, it’s reaaaaally hard to create natural sentences that use a specific limited amount of grammar
B.) Like @Chimmsen touched upon – reading above your level and being able to dissect unfamiliar content is kind of a pillar of immersive learning
I’m sure we’ll figure something out in the future tho.
