Japanese Words that I find super interesting

My favorite type of words in Japanese are ones which have a double consonant and end with り. The ones I am able to come up with :

  • しっかり
  • とったり
  • ゆっくり
  • やっぱり

I just find these kind of words really pleasant to say and hear. My hope is that people can reply other words that fit into this pattern so I can bask in them and have loads of fun.

Cool tip for searching Jisho I learned not too long ago: you can use wildcards. So I tried throwing your pattern into Jisho to see what comes up and looks like there is hundreds of words that seem to follow this pattern! Check it out: Jisho *っ*り

Some that stand out to me:

  • しゃっくり
  • はっきり
  • がっきり
  • ぐっすり

And this is a fun one I hadn’t seen before: 行ったり来たり. Almost a two for one!

I believe these kinds of words are called mimetic adverbs, although I’m not sure if that label is applied to geminated words or just those exhibiting reduplication. Some ideas can be represented by both patterns, like びしょびしょ・びっしょり.

There are hundreds of these kinds of words–well over a thousand. You can quickly find them on Jisho using the #on-mim search tag.

I didn’t know that these words had an actual name. Thank you for the links, your reply was very informative. :smiling_face_with_three_hearts:

The Japanese just love their onomatopoeia, don’t they? I love these kinds of words as well.
Some I find interesting

  • バラバラ
  • だらだら
  • ペコペコ

The reason I find words with double consonants that end with り so funny is that words that are similar to that in Hindi have a lot of impact. Or, in Hindi, you can add impact to a normal sounding word by stressing it so that it conforms to the above pattern. There is a guttural almost violent feel to them in Hindi and that colors my perception of words in Japanese.

Gamification of language learning makes for an efficient and effective tool. I hope they finish the game soon, I am really looking forward to it.

It seems very interesting, they say the game will be released this year, I will follow them on twitter thought I don’t see the game in any gaming platform to add it to wishlist yet

I like this word:

吮癰舐痔せんようしじ

Pivoting into Japanese sayings, I think this one is quite succinct for this situation.

お釣り means change, or the money you get back from making a purchase.

But the other day I found out it also means the water splashing back on you when using the toilet. It’s change.

I still giggle like a 10 year old kid when I think about it. That’s the real dumb/clever humor I live for.
