JLPT December 2023

Passed N1! I can’t sing Bunpro’s praises enough. Big time thank you! Just under two years of on-and-off studying got me here from the seemingly impassable upper N4/low N3 plateau that tormented me for years. I’m forever indebted!

Passed N3! Lowest score was reading, so going to work on that in prep for N2. Thank you Bunpro 🫡

Well done everyone, even for just showing up and getting that test taken. Youre inspiring me study more!

Passed N4 124/180. Congrats to those that passed and well done for trying to those who have deferred success to the future.

Well, 10 months from zero to taking the N3.

N3 合格 Passed
Total Score: 96/180 (95 points required) :scream:
Vocab: 35/60
Reading: 24/60
Listening: 37/60

That was too close for comfort with the cut-off being 95 points. From here on out, it will be N2 all the way until July for me. Might consider sentence mining and reading more stuff. I also understood fairly quickly after the test that grammar is one of my weakest points, so ended up buying lifetime Bunpro during the sale to catch up with my Kanji knowledge.

Well done to everyone pass or fail!

Started Japanese learning late August 2023, and got 133/180 taking the N5! Next step is hopefully N4 in July and N3 in December, good work everyone!!

N1 不合格
Not surprising as it was a first attempt and 2023 was a busy year.
Did decently well in Language Knowledge (thanks in part to Bunpro), so really I mostly just need to get more practice with reading and listening. I have a kindle loaded with books and a phone loaded with podcasts to that effect. Then I’ll hit the practice exams closer to the end of the year.

Ended up passing the N2!!

Total: 120/180
Vocab/grammar: 38/60
Reading: 32/60
Listening: 50/60

Honestly quite surprised I passed, given how bad I felt after taking the test. It was a bit close all things considered (reading is pretty yikes) but otherwise everything looks pretty accurate. Funnily enough I also scored a 50/60 on listening last year on the N3 last year, which just goes to show how lopsided my japanese ability is ww

Great job to everyone who did and didn’t pass!

I passed N5! I would not have even know results were out without this thread - I’d just assumed I would get an email saying they were out but apparently not.

I only got 93/180 so barely a pass (I think 80 is the minimum?) but that’s because I sat much more important exams for my life in 2023 so Japanese studies really fell by the wayside from like March-October. Happy I passed anyway and hopefully I can get back on track in 2024

I passed N2!
Vocabulary/Grammar: 36/60
Reading: 32/60
Listening: 50/60

More reading practice is now in my future as I contemplate N1 in December 2024.

Exactly the same boat I’m in. The grading system makes it hard for me to understand what my strengths/weaknesses are. In reality, my reading is far superior to my listening, but according to this test it’s not?

To be fair, I didn’t study much for this N2 test, I just took it to see if I could pass. I think if I focus my study to passing this test (not just general Japanese study) I can pass. Essentially just playing the game, worked for passing the DLPT .

Great score! Bragging rights very much earned.

Highly recommend! I was able to eek out a handful of crucial points by turning my attention towards test taking tactics just during the last four or five days of preparation. Namely, do the big meaty reading questions at the end fist thing, then do all the grammar and vocab, then do as much reading as you can to avoid running out of time. Make sure you don’t leave any empty bubbles for the 25% guessing boost. Also, the observation that many of the listening questions follow a very predictable pattern allows you to know what to be on the look out for in advance, and not miss it.

Because of how the scaling works, if a question is particularly easy in a year, it gets valued at close to nothing, and if a question is considered particularly hard, it’s worth quite a lot. A lot of people found the listening quite difficult this year and the reading much easier, so the scores adjust to reflect that, meaning sometimes they look a bit odd. I’m in the same boat, being sure I nailed the reading, and afraid I’d fail the listening, when the opposite happened come result-time.
Of course, the above is a bit of a simplification, the grading is more like if every combination of answers was assigned a score based on how many correct answers there are weighted by how likely it was to get that specific combination of answers. For example if a person used contrastive は correctly in one question, and not in another, then the first answer might be a fluke, and is probably worth less points. Makes it virtually impossible to know how well you did in advance.

I just got a chance to look at the results after a trip and I did a lot better than expected.

N2 156/180

Vocabulary/Grammar: 49/60
Reading: 50/60
Listening: 57/60

I can’t thank Bunpro enough, it seemed like every new grammar point appeared in my games/manga/streams just as I finished reviewing them. If things go well, I’ll attempt N1 on December.

Wow those are real good scores, what was the percentile you got? With scores like that I’m sure you’ll do well if attempting N1. I passed N2 through the skin of my teeth! So I think I’ll maybe need 2 years before I challenge it.

It seems like that information is not available in my country, so I can’t tell you what percentile I got. If the actual score test report includes it , I’ll update the thread once I get it.

I’m glad you passed N2, it was challenging for sure! I skipped N4 and N3, so I was a bit uneasy about the exam in general.

Just got the certificate in the post, didn’t realise the results came out online.

N1 145/180
Grammar 49/60
Reading 48/60
Listening 48/60
