I took and passed N2 last year, but was wondering if anyone in the thread who took both N2 and N1 already had an impression of what the main differences to N1 are feeling wise (not format-wise).
So far, it doesn’t feel that different to me at all. Just more vocab, barely any “N1” grammar.
Yep, nothing difference at all, just keep grinding on vocabs, and some N1 grammars and lots of N1 reading.
That’s all.
Well, against all expectations I passed the summer sitting, so I shall not be joining you all in December. Best of luck, everyone! I’ll see you again for the N2 next year.
I’m officially registered for the N3 in December. I’m feeling reasonably confident, as I’ve thoroughly studied the grammar, and I have a fairly solid foundation of vocabulary. The place I’m most concerned about is listening. It’s hard to find good listening practice that is at the right level. My central plan for the final stretch is to do a lot of mock tests. Just keep doing them and going over what I get wrong. I feel like if my foundation is solid, that’s the best thing I can do to be prepared for the test itself.
Just registered for N4 despite thinking this whole time I’d do N5- but screw it! I’m doubling down and going to try and beat this thing!! Good luck to everyone!!
Currently pondering whether I want to sign up for December or not - I got my N2 pass, but I don’t think I could be N1 by December, so it becomes a question of whether to skip or whether to re-take as a progress benchmark.
Registered for N4 at Boston, failed N5 with just 1 points last year. Still working full time and aiming for minimum 1 hour per day using Bunpro and Genki II. I hope it will be enough this time. Best of luck everyone.
San Francisco N4 filled up in 3 minutes this morning. I managed to get mine booked in the first 60 seconds. This will be my second year in a row trying for N4, after being massively underprepared last year (having only begun my journey in May of that same year).
I also got my N2 pass but already payed for the december test but I was able to change the level so I figured was not just take N1, I have no intention to cram like crazy to pass but might as well get a feel for it!
Woah the JLPT has closed for N5, N4 and N3 across all of Japan?!
Just received the confirmation email for N3 in Lyon !
At the same time as another classmate too, I wonder if it means that they filled all the spots already ? Registration opened last monday
Quite possible. I got refused once, and I sent my registration 3 days after it opened. It fills really fast, I usually go to Paris now since you have direct feedback on the website instead of waiting a few days to know
N1 is a significant step up in terms of being difficult to understand. The number of vocab to expect from N1 compared to N2 should be an indicator, and keep in mind that it’s not “being able to understand it after pondering a bit”, it’s still the Japanese way of you hear /read it once, you don’t understand? 不合格 shrugs. The reading section is also just really hard to study for in an effective manner, no-one talks in essay form on a daily business and if you don’t already enjoy Japanese poetry that part won’t be easy. And keep in mind we’re still talking JLPT - the test that intentionally misdirects you.
All bets are off basically. You pass this one, that means you’re done.
My personal dislike of the city aside, Paris is way more expensive in terms of distance and accommodation so I’ve done my best to avoid it so far. It’s a bit frustrating to be stuck with one exam a year because of this, but I’m not in a hurry
I have a friend that lodges me for free, so it’s a good opportunity to see some friends and I usually manage to keep the costs down since I can take a bus or a train at weird hours.
One exam per year is not too bad if you can keep motivation, my exam friends and I seem to be locked to only be able to pass one level per year, with one pass, one fail per year
I actually planned to try and sit in Lyon this winter but since they opened the registrations 3 days before the july session results and being burned once, it’s going to be Paris again…
@sokow
I also have friends in both cities, but unfortunately the ones in Paris don’t really live at the heart of the city anymore, meaning that I’d have to wake-up at an insane hour to get to the exam center on time. That plus the sole cost on transportation to move across Paris now ? On the other hand, I can literally walk from my Lyon friends’ place to the testing center, so “la question elle est vite répondue” as they say
But yeah, the fact that they couldn’t synchronize with the previous test results isn’t a good look. And it was even worse in some other countries, given how early some people started to talk about their registration here…
Good god, JLPT N5 SF filled up in like the first two minutes; I was at checkout and it told me I was too late. Luckily I was able to go back and sign up for Monterey in time.
Six years of studying and time for the first test. Looking forward to it.
Got registered for N5 in Seattle!
Glad I moved quickly. At 12:01 there were 101 seats. Finished checking out at 12:04 and went back and checked and there were 38 seats left. Talked to a co-worker for a bit, came back at 12:20 and they were all gone in Seattle. Yeesh those seats went quick!
Passed N4 in July, registered for N3 in December. Maybe if I stare at the vocab list long enough my brain will absorb it.
