First time taking the JLPT and passed N2. Very surpising 50/60 in the listening section, praise the anime!
Not gonna lie, the grammar/vocab score makes me a bit nervous (especially since I know my vocab tends to be pretty solid so I must’ve done real bad on grammar), but it’s still a bit of a relief to actually know I passed! With this score the first time round the N1 this December might end up being more to scope it out than to try and pass but oh well, the [immigration] points would help so I’m going to give it a shot regardless. Just need to do a lot of Bunpro and Shin Kanzen Master grammar I guess.
N4 passed! Everything well except listening that was closer to fail… So next plan is N3 for next July, decreasing a bit the rhythm here in Bunpro and in Wanikani, and focusing more in immersion, listening and speaking.
I passed the actual N1 as well.
Ambitiously went for N2 as a bit of a level check / maybe ギリギリ a pass, and didn’t do a great deal of focussed study.
I unsurprisingly failed but was actually only 3 marks off which I was pleasantly surprised with. Got 35 / 21 / 31 with the weak mark in reading so I know what to focus on. Busy during the December exam period so will be July next year to hopefully pass with flying colours.
Failed N2 as expected.
83/180.
Main issue was listening with 22/60.
I think I was too tired for listening and couldn’t focus well enough.
Anyway I think I am done with JLPT. I don’t need it and it too much effort for just a hobby.
I got a slot in Portland, OR for N5- it looks like they all sold out within 15 minutes o.o
This is my first JLPT, have been studying Japanese off and on for about 10 years. Every time I take a hiatus I basically force myself to start over, which I think is actually a way for me to avoid challenging myself. I don’t expect N5 to be a challenge other than the listening portion, but I figure if I get this under my belt I’ll HAVE to continue into new material
I’m going to attempt a 5 year plan of taking the JLPT every December, so theoretically I’ll take N1 in 2029 if I can choochoo train my study momentum and focus to be faster and stronger each year. Plus after this test I will at long last force some courage and start using something like iTalki. Reading and writing is fun but I’m doing this to live in Japan so, gonna have to listen and speak with real humans lol
What’s everyone’s favorite way for listening practice? I commute so I’m wanting to put together a Playlist of podcasts or stories and the like. (I’m so test-oriented it’s hard for me to not focus solely on JLPT practice questions- I need real life stuff )
At least you’ve set your goals, 1 a year should be doable with previous experience so good luck!
You have to be somewhat good at listening to do this, but I like to play video games in vc with Japanese people, it is low stress and you get speeking practice as well.
Hi Jean! I’m planning to take the N2 in December. Had you completed all of the grammar points in Bunpro up to N2 before you took the test? Trying to gauge where I’m at right now, thanks!
Yes - didn’t track exactly when but probably clocked them off about a month or so before the test proper.
An issue with the grammar specifically is while you need to learn a very broad range of grammar points in case they come up, due to the limited questions you will only be presented with a few but it will check for your deep understanding of those points.
For example, you might get a question where you have 2 obviously wrong answers but then need to choose between XXというもの and XXということ and really know the difference between もの and こと in the context presented. I’m pretty sure I was lacking in this department!
I think while Bunpro is great for introducing you to all the grammar and providing loads of example sentences, you need to do more specific JLPT prep that focusses on the differences between similar points.
Thank you! That’s an incredibly helpful reply. I’ll make sure to be extra strict with the details in my study.
I passed my N3 exam! A somewhat mediocre score, but a pass is a pass. I will continue studying N3 until I feel comfortable with that content before moving on to the N2 exam. I think I will shoot for next year’s July N2 exam.
