I was thinking about taking the N3 in July, but the more I think about it, the less point I see in it.

Sad to say, but N5-N3 are basically worthless certificates. They’re mostly there just to assess your study progress in Japanese. You can’t really flex them to get a job or anything. In which case I may as well save myself the hassle, do a mock N3 on my own, and assess my level that way, and just keep studying until I’m closer to N2 before thinking about the JLPT.

dang, didn’t know USA only had it in December. Might’ve signed up for this last one if I had known that.

No, but Canada does if traveling there is an option?

There’s that aspect of it, but if you want to have a better chance of passing the N2 it’s not a bad Idea to take the N3 to get accustomed to the test and testing procedures. Not that you can’t pass N2 without doing that, but if you do care about getting the certificate, then if might be of interest.

Also worth remembering that mock exams tend to be easier and also don’t have the same sense of pressure as real exams.

Luckily for me the N3 is like it is and not like N1 :relieved:

Vocab and Grammar are similar because I even think they use some old JLPT questions as the template.

However the Bunpro reading is beyond easy. I scored a 100% for the first practice test in about 40 mins. I didn’t manage to even finish the actual N1 reading properly and I gave myself an hour and 10 mins to do it.

I’m in the US so I’d have to wait until December, but I’m hoping to take N1. I have N2 already, and the last time I took N1 I didn’t manage to pass it. I haven’t felt up to managing it in years mostly because of a vocabulary deficit, but I’m working on vocab and kanji again and I’m going to go for it if I have the money to pay for the travel.

Not to mention that having the pressure of a looming official test pushes you to study and prepare way more beforehand than self-assessment would alone, imo!

For example, there are tons of words that we might think we generally know, but the 用法 section in vocab demands that you know exactly when a word is appropriate and when it’s unnatural. Knowing that you’re going to be asked the exact usage of random words pushes you to master every word you’re learning!

Not sure if I can make in time to opt for the N4. I am very sloooowly learning, and I passed N5 on my second attempt on July 2025. My target is to take the test on December 2026.

Slow is fine, as long as you don’t stop, everyone has his/her own pace. To just keep going no matter what is already an achievement.

I like this č€ƒćˆę–¹ -It’s too late to start now, so let’s begin when we hit a round number, 200 days sounds perfect :japanese_goblin:

Oh man, I’m busy that day … So it’s OK if I start on 100 days left instead, yeah? …

not sure if i should take the n2 or just really try to push through and challenge N1. How’s the gap between those 2? I passed N3 in July and I’ve been studying at a rather lackadaisical pace, but I’m planning to ramp that up in the new year. What do y’all think?
