JLPT Mock Test Durations

I’ve been doing the mock tests. I frequently go over the allotted time. Does anyone know if this affects the score?

I think you can get extra time for the exam itself if you have a reason (ADHD) so I’m not too worried.

In the JLPT once you run out of time you run out. Bunpro allows you to run over so you can practice, but it doesn’t adjust the score AFAIK.

Time management is one of the most important things you can learn from a mock test. Understanding when you’re taking too long on a single question and moving on, how to comprehend quicker etc. is really useful to reflect on.

That’s not true, there are no exceptions in the real exam. You should train to be able to answer everything during the alloted time, sometimes knowing when to skip (or fill out randomly) a question is more important than getting it right.

This is false. Special accommodations are a thing you can apply for, and extended time is one of the accommodations provided.

I stand corrected, I thought the exceptions were meants for physical disabilities but it’s true there are some for ADHD. https://www.jlpt.jp/statistics/pdf/2017_2_4.pdf

With that being said, even if your testing facility has confirmed you’ll receive special accomodations working on your time management should be a priority if you are always exceeding the alloted time.

Yeah, you can get accommodations, but I’m not sure how difficult it is to get them.

Looking at the limited number of people getting these accommodations*, I probably wouldn’t rely on getting extra time and focus on trying to get as good as you can at the test in the standard time.

  • if anyone’s curious, here are the stats for the July 2025 series. So significantly less than 1% of test takers get accommodations for developmental disabilities such as ADHD, although admittedly I have no idea how many people applied
