Kanji input for vocabulary

Hello,

I’d like to suggest a quality-of-life improvement for vocabulary reviews.

When I use a Japanese keyboard (IME) with voice recognition, my answers are automatically converted to kanji. Since the reviews currently require kana-only input, I get an error about kanji input, which prevents me from using these efficient input methods.

Could you please consider allowing the correct kanji form of a word as a valid answer? This would make the review process much smoother. Thanks for considering this change!

I would love to be able to answer in kanji too, I think it would help with my recall, however I appreciate not everyone would want this or like in the case of doing my reviews at work, I don’t have the ability to answer in anything other than English, IT even block gmail!!!
So the option to toggle on and off would be lovely!

We have actually implemented this but haven’t released it. One of the issues with kanji input is that you will lose all of the hint system content.

For example if we are looking for たべました, we have hints for たべた that might ask for a more polite version. If you type in たべた it will trigger that hint, 食べた would not.

That only applies to those specific hint ones. In the case where たべました and たべた are both “accepted answers” without hints, then both 食べた and 食べました would be accepted as kanji input.

Unfortunately it isn’t super clear how it works for the setting and the downsides of losing those “Close but can you try something else?” hints seems like a huge drawback.

Does anyone looking for kanji input have any feedback on the above?

“Can you say it another way?”

Pray thee, imagine we seek the form たべました. We hold prompts for たべた that may beseech thee for a more courteous expression. Shouldst thou input たべた, that prompt shall straightway arise; yet if thou enter 食べた, it shall stir not.
