Kanjinoobman aiming to be a kanjipro, man

A post inspired by chimmsen.

just started my journey of learning japanese and i’m going to be posting random thoughts, or ideas here during my journey. the idea that maybe something i write here along the way helps someone else makes me happy so that’s the main reason. and although it’s a bit selfish i might treat it as a sort of ‘japanese learning’-diary from time to time.

if people have a comment, feel free to join the conversation! i’d love to talk with people and share experiences cause i think that’s the best way to learn:)

anyways as of now i am doing the free bunpro and free wanikani stuff and i’m planning to buy a lifetime (i am a college student as well so i wanna be able to take my sweet time lol) subscription to both once they (probably) go on sale in a month or two.

anyways i wish everyone who reads this luck with their own journeys too!

Chimmsen mentioned!

It’s a great aspiration … but why not aim to be a kanjipro, bunny? :rabbit2:

i actually saw your rabbit deck some days ago and it really cracked me up, especially the “pure evil” haha - very educational!

i think rabbits are a bit too fast paced for me and so the chicken is more relatable since i cannot fly (…yet). i will draw much inspiration from your bunny deck though hehe!

btw out of curiosity, how long did lvl 100 take? it seems like quite the feat when i compare to most people on the site:)

how would one go about doing this? i tried on gravitar but it seems it does not change on the community page. only on the main bunpro page.

If you were in a chicken’s egg and it’s now cracked up, it could be time to make the chicken deck! :hatching_chick:

But I’m pretty sure you’re actually on Team Rabbit :rabbit2:

It didn’t feel like it took that long to get to level 100 tbh, as a lot of that was due to a sync with Wanikani, loads of katakana words, etc.
But now I look back, I’ve been here for over 3 years! That’s about a third of a typical rabbit’s lifespan :scream:

Recruiting new members is futile, Team Possum already has you surrounded and outnumbered

Hahaha, so that’s what you think … Just wait till you take the hats off those “possums”!

With Kanjinoobman’s support too, victory is almost guaranteed :rabbit2:

Team Badger sitting off in the corner…

I’ll just keep reading until my team grows on its own.

To change your forum avatar: while being in the forum, you click your profile setting, go to preferences and there you are

Don’t let you get pressured into a team, yet, though. I heard it’s a lifetime commitment, and I’m pretty sure fish don’t do well in bunny or possum (and why aren’t badger and possum in the same team?) environment :joy: Birds on the other side like their extensive baths, so maybe you would do alright on team bird?

i really love the energy and commitment on this forum. feels like ive been missing out, but im here now:)

ive changed my pfp. as you can see im ready to fight 力いっぱい !!
(i’ve created my own mnemonic for 力いっぱい: “chicken run” and the rest is in hiragana on WK*)

*chicken run is a great movie about chickens trying to escape a farm (with all their might):

Fun facts! Possums are marsupials, meaning they’re more like koalas and kangaroos. Badgers are mustelids, more closely related to raccoons and red pandas.
Also, the Japanese badger is native to southern Japan and is called アナグマ, or hole-bear.

I’m sorry for the posts lately, don’t wanna clog up the feed. Do tell me if I post too often (I think I might post here every 2 months or so with general questions about my learning experience).

idk about other people here but I feel like I may be using too much time on individual reviews on WK and BP… sometimes I’m doing something meanwhile or I’m in a space where I can’t focus as much so it makes sense that I don’t immediately get some kanji or vocab question, but I’ve been having kanji where I just spend three whole minutes to recall the mnemonic, and I feel like by then I’m “cheating” the SRS into thinking I know it well since I got it correct, while in reality it isn’t something I know super well, since it took me long to recall from my memory.

so I guess you’d say “well kanjinoobman, why don’t you just bite the bullet and get them wrong so you can master them when you DO know them well??” and I’d say “I’m scared they’re gonna pile up. I’m scared there’s gonna be so many that I won’t have space in my little brain to learn them.”
and honestly a thing that has been very hard for me to do is to give up on doing all my daily lessons, and to just accept that slow and steady wins the race. It’s OK to do less lessons in order to cement your vocab instead of “learning” it.

on another note I really really want to try speaking japanese to people (on a gaming platform or something) but I just know I’m still so limited, and I wouldn’t be able to say much to them, let alone understand half of what they are saying. on a more positive note i did finally get through an entire “nihongo con teppei” episode understanding everything.

I am starting to notice that I know random words now though which is pretty cool. like when watching anime but also in daily life when I taste something and go “ooo おいしいですね?” (and my gf looks at me with confusion) for example. It’s a good feeling.
I’m guessing quite a lot of you on here live in japan or at least have connections there, so to those that don’t: how do you practice your speaking/listening the best way?

also: my favorite phrase has quickly become 力いっぱい. what was your favorite phrase starting off and what is it now?

I think you could even post more often. Only a lively community is a fun community

as long as you don’t get frustrated by long recall times, everything is fine. Thinking a long time to activate the correct neuronal pathway strengthens the connection, this is active learning. when you can recall it instantly, than it’s already “learned” (as far as you can learn something purely by SRS). Personally, I wouldn’t even mind if the item still takes long when it’s at the burning/master stage as immersion will drill fast recognition anyway. (But opinions differ on this topic, and how you deal with frustration also plays a role in that decision) SRS is just a tool to get you to the immersion stage

I’m trying to give my best not to do this, but I’m definetly thinking such anime sentences regularily  Glad other people have this, too ^^ The only thing I just can’t avoid to say is “仕方ないね” (it can’t be helped). well, my family has to deal with at least some japanese ^^

I’ll sometimes throw out a cheeky, ただいま!when I get home, or いただきます  before eating but I’ll get a “wot you saying?” reaction from my family, so now it’s under my breath…
