Let us confess "I don't know", please?

Especially when returning after a long break, if I answer as well as I can and get the “this would work, but actually we’re looking for something else…” kind of hint, it’s super-discouraging. At first, I’m just thrilled that I got something decently workable! But then I can’t move on without intentionally making the answer worse (because I simply don’t remember what alternative you’re fishing for).

It’s similarly frustrating that there’s no “OK, I really have no clue” button right from the initial question prompt. In the rare cases when I have no memory of the corresponding expression at all, then I have to generate nonsense to proceed. (Again, this affects me especially now, coming back after some time away. Maybe I deserve some pain, but also BunPro might want to more gently re-engage folks in my situation…)

In either case, some kind of direct button for “Mark this as not known” would feel so much better than having to make up a bad answer in order to get told I’m WRONG (No surprise!) and then get shown what BunPro was looking for.

As a workaround, I type a random vowel and hit enter just so that it’ll mark it wrong and tell me the answer. I also hit enter again to move on so that it’ll quiz me again soon. :man_shrugging:

You can reset your progress and if you’re coming back after a break I would highly recommend it, even if just for the current N level you’re studying.

Fred, your answer shows that you are refreshingly free of the kind of stubborn literalism and pride that makes me cringe at submitting an “answer” that I know to be wrong. (As an educator, I am careful not to push my students to guess; recognizing and admitting that one doesn’t know is a particularly valued trait in my field…)

It really bothers me as well (I hate intentionally “guessing” wrong) but it’s not a deal breaker. A nice-to-have feature for sure, and if it’s easy enough to implement right now, why not? But there are bigger priorities in my opinion~

Hi, I struggled with this at times as well so I know how you feel. Here’s some of the things that I have done:

  • Click the Review button again, it gives you a new questions so it is the “I don’t know button” you are looking for.
  • There was a time that I took a break and I was overwhelmed with things I forgot. It was a really difficult time so as a last resort, I started using the “reset streaks” and “remove from review” with a lot of grammar points. Then when the review load is reduced to a manageable level, I slowly add the those grammar points back on.
