Let's play Standard Shiritori! しりとりをしましょう!

海老 (えび) - shrimp

I love this one, the mnemonic I use to remember it is ‘the old man of the sea’, which is literally the meaning of the kanjis. Should be read カイロウ but no, it’s one of those things.

びくりした = you suprised me/that made me jump (pretty sure thats not a verb idk)

する and した would both turn it into a verb, though I guess this is more of an interjection so I’d say it’s acceptable

茨城 (いばらき) - a prefecture in Kantou (茨城県 - いばらきけん), having 水戸 (みと) for capital city.
According to the legend (Etymology 1), people long long ago built there a castle (城) with thorns (茨), thus the name.
Sometimes pronounced いばらぎ, but it seems to be a mishearing of the softening of the “k” sound in Ibaraki dialect.
The prefecture it twinned with a department of Île-de-France :fr:
Not to confuse with 茨木 (いばらき), a city in the Osaka prefecture :eyes:

暫く (しばらく) - for a moment…

…but also ‘for the time being’ or ‘for a while’ and, on top of that, apparently it can take the place of 久しぶり as 暫くぶり. So fuzzy timeframe for this word and lots of practice to get the knack of it.

9時 (くじ) = 9 O’clock.

I guess you could think about it as something close to “It’s been a minute” in English. Personally, I’d say the 振り (ぶり) part is what makes this interesting (as opposed to 暫く).

It would then be for shorter timeframes? I understand that 久しぶり would be the equivalent to ‘it’s been a while’, possibly years?

As for 振り (ぶり), I see what you mean. I thought it was ふり (also 振り) after 連濁 but no, it is a suffix on its own merits.

次のは 自転車旅行 (じてんしゃりょこう) - bicycle trip
