さと ー Wisdom, (lit. Smartness)

Vote to ban さ form of い adj for the same reason い adj are banned in the first place? It’s the same problem just with さ instead of い、 as all い adj can just be ended with さ to make them a noun…

I’m on the fence on this. The strat in shiritori is usually to corner the other person by making words with the same ending kana until they run out, but I feel like it makes it more harmful for us learning like this. Otherwise it is a good way to learn more words through being able to use adjectives. Curious on what everyone else thinks though

I vote no. I mean, they are legit nouns even if they are derived from adjectives. I say that we just stick with the rule of no adjectives and just leave it at that.

車 (くるま) = Car.

Obviously I agree with Delta and Neon Kitsune. I vote to allow being able to convert i-adjectives in this way, since it allows for more words to be playable.

The reason base い adj. aren’t allowed (and verbs for that matter) is because it decreases the variety of sounds you’ll see in a game of しりとり because everything would end in an い (or う) sound, and would also make the game significantly harder, as there is such a vast number of い adj. Being able to convert that vast number of い adj. into nouns using さ would set a precedent of allowing all adjectives (い and な) to be turned into nouns using さ, leading to doubles of already allowed な adjectives (綺麗 and 綺麗さ being both acceptable words), and a more competitive, unfriendly game for newer members. Banning さ nouns would decrease the total vocab, but I feel would be healthier for the game.

I do agree having more words playable would be to the community’s benefit for the most part, but with this logic we should also be using base い adj. and base-form verbs, as that would allow us more vocab to use.

They are 100% legit, I just feel it would decrease the amount of vocab we’ll see in the future if we allow so many more words that end in さ.

If we decide to continue using さ I understand, I just have some reservations as to whether or not it’s a good idea.

Good day,

I see what you mean and am guilty as charged, just my playful nature took the best of me, I coudn’t help myself. :bowing_man:t2: Remember what we did other times with words beginning and ending with the same kana…

I wouldn’t ban them as they are acceptable words as per the rules but would handle them with care, not to be abused and be used as a last resort (if it makes any sense).

Incidentally, I saw this entry on the same theme.

Maybe a ban is too far, but I do believe they should be used with care. With great power…
