A friend of mine who lives in Japan says that mimetic words are one of the most important things to learn if you ever plan on going there because people use them all the time.

I agree with Lyrith-san, through my practice I’ve come across lots of mimetic words:ギリギリ、ウキウキ、ドタバタ、etc.
Even in Bunpro:どんどん、だんだん、etc.
Some are pretty straightforward, but some have lots of nuances: like ギリギリ being a grinding sound, but also used for doing something at the last possible second etc. Fun, and its amazing how once you learn their meaning, it just makes sense? Like the sound makes total sense.
