Manga Kotoba App - Page by page manga vocabulary

Hello everyone,

I’ve been working on a small project called Manga Kotoba App (iOS only), and I’d love to invite some of you to test it and share your thoughts.

The idea behind the app is quite simple: it helps you read manga in Japanese by giving you access to vocabulary page by page. Instead of interrupting your reading constantly, you can quickly glance at the words used on that specific page and keep going more smoothly.

One feature I find especially useful is the ability to mark words as “known.” Once you do that, those words won’t appear again anywhere else in the app, even in different manga, so you can focus only on what you don’t know. The goal is to make reading less frustrating and more fluid.

You can also track words to review later if something catches your attention.

A small note: the app does not include SRS. I wanted to focus on making the reading experience itself better.

I’m currently adding new volumes every 2–3 days. I’m using AI to extract vocabulary, which is more costly but gives significantly better results than traditional OCR: fewer missing words and more reliable data overall.

If this sounds interesting and you’d like to help test it, feel free to reply or send me a message. I’d really appreciate any feedback.

Thank you!

Sounds like something I could be interested in, depending on the titles that are available ! I don’t think SRS is necessary, we’ve already have a lot of SRS apps. I’m usually logging the words I looked up while reading to add them to Bunpro / my kanji learning app later, so a “words look up history” is a nice feature to have

Hey! Glad to hear that

If there’s something specific you enjoy, I’d love to know. It helps me prioritize what to add next.

And that’s exactly how I use it too! The tracked words feature works like a lookup history, so you can easily revisit words later and move them to Bunpro.

If you’d like to try it, here’s the TestFlight link:

Unfortunately I’m Android only, so I’ll just have to wait for the alternative version aha

Very cool! I’m also not on iOS, but I love the idea.

There’s already a Manga Kotoba project, but it’s listing OCR/mokuro as tech stack (About | Manga Kotoba) and you say you something else.

So is yours an unrelated project with the same name?

They’re related, but not exactly the same. I’m also a developer on the Manga Kotoba website project.

That said, there are some key differences between the two. One of the main ones is the focus on page-by-page vocabulary and a superior method of vocabulary extraction (for example: 今日きみの手をとってあの空の下 1 | Manga Kotoba).

Also, at the moment, the two projects don’t share data.

Hi!

I find the project pretty interesting. I’ll probably give your app a shot. Currently, I read quite a bit using ttsu reader, but it’s true that for paper manga, the lookup process is relatively slow whenever I run into an unknown word.

Thank you very much for giving it a try. I truly appreciate it

The selection is still a bit limited at the moment, so if there’s any title you’d like to see, please let me know. I’d be happy to prioritize it so you can have a better experience with the app.

Use manatan, it’s better than anything and works on all platforms.

Hi Thanks for developing this app.
I took a look at your app, which is pretty nice~ tried a bit on One piece. The page by page function makes it easier.

Function wise I think this is good enough, but I assume mostly people with ability below JLPT N2 level would needs this. For people above JLPT N2 level, they may not need a app to guide them page by page. So for manga selection, I would recommend to check what is “popular” on Learn Natively, and filter by levels, maybe that will fits most language learner’s needs. ~

Overall I like this interface and UI! and keep on going and I will try a bit more and give you more feed back.
