N1 Preparation

Hi,
I joined Bunpro when it was starting out but I have to admit I haven’t used it much. But I have used it. I have 332 items in my review queue. I think they are mostly N5 but I’m not really interested in studying them at the moment. I want to study only N1 because I am planning to take the N1 test in July of next year. What’s the best way to remove all these from my queue? Should I just reset everything and start again?

Welcome back!

If you go to Settings → Reset you can choose what you’d like to reset

My advice here would differ based on whether you are basically already ready to take the N1 and want to cover your bases, or if you are hoping to be ready for the test in July and you’re currently below a passing level.

If you’re already comfortably N1 and want to fill in the gaps of your knowledge then I’d suggest reading over the (N2 and) N1 list first just to see to what extent you are missing things or not, and mark things as mastered which you think you already know. Once you’ve done that then I’d just go through (N2 and) N1 in order, perhaps occasionally ‘mining’ things by adding them directly to your queue when you happen to come across them in the wild.

If you’re completely new to most (N2 and) N1 material then I’d just go through it all in order, maybe ‘mining’ things on occasion.

The reason I mention N2 above is that a lot of grammar on the N1 is stuff that often comes up in N2 lists or variations of “simple” grammar but with a finer understanding of usage being tested.

I’m sure others will have opinions and advice as well but hopefully that’s enough to start chewing on. Bunpro is quite different in some respects to 7 years ago so if you arent sure of how something works then feel free to ask. Good luck!

Thanks. I think I could pass Level 1 if I took it today but grammar is definitely my weak point. I think I will reset everything and study L1 and if time L2 grammar. Thanks.

We’ve also got practice tests with Bunpro now! So you don’t have to guess

Thanks. I took one of them. I think I read somewhere that they are on the easy side. So I need to do some fine-tuning.

Damn! Ya boy works fast! :joy: Congrats. I haven’t tried the Bunpro N1 but at least you know you’re not way off the mark.

Yeahp I get the feeling @deadhippo is gonna crush the N1 :joy:

Good luck preparing!
新完全マスター is the GOAT series for JLPT prep BTW.
Was very 1:1 in terms of difficulty compared to the actual thing.

Thanks. That’s great to know because I actually bought 新完全マスター 文法 a while ago.

It’s only been a few days but I am struggling to remember the new grammar. Here I need to output from memory but in the JLPT, I just have to choose the appropriate answers. I wonder if this is the best way for me to prepare for the test. Or maybe I am not using Bunpro effectively.

I’m guessing that right now you have the reviews set to the default fill-in question type

If you think this isn’t working for you, you can change that and experiment with the different review types that don’t require your output. Something like the reading question type maybe, in you case?

I think you can find the option to change this in the deck settings, or globally in your profile settings.

That sounds great. I’ll have a look.

Thanks. I’m planning to take it in July. I’ve decided to keep at the Bunpro as is for the rest of the month. Hopefully I will get used to it.

OK. So, I’m still at it. I have started about 20% of the N1 grammar which I find pretty tough. I think it is slowly sinking in, though. I have also started the N2 grammar but just a little. It seems OK so far. And I am doing the N1 vocab which seems easy enough. I am doing three items of each per day. At what point does it usually get hectic. I know it’s different for everyone based on their accuracy but in general when will I start getting overwhelmed with reviews? Or what was your experience?

If you re doing 3 new grammar per days, it should be fine. Just keep on doing so. It is oly getting too hectic if you are attempting to learn 20+ new grammar pionts per day.

Didn’t expect that. Good to know though. I remember my Wanikani experience becoming all-consuming. I might do a few extra lessons here and there then.

I’m still at it and I got my first seasoned grammar point.
までもない - I guessed.

I’ve started 39% of the N1 grammar. I think I will continue with it at this point.
I started N2 grammar a little later and am at 17%.
N1 vocab at 2%. - I’m not too worried about vocab so I won’t focus on it much.

My plan now is to go through all the N1 grammar and then do as many JLPT past tests as I can before July. I will also analyze my mistakes in the first Bunpro test and do the others.
