N2 Grammar Explanations! 10/12/2022

Hi Everyone!

お疲れ様です! Today I would like to announce the first batch of N2 grammar explanations that are now live on the website!

At this present moment, there are only 50 explanations, and they are a bit dispersed throughout all of N2, but this is because we are doing a slight reorder of this particular level, as we have done in the past with other levels. The reason why there are only 50 explanations right now is because we have decided to do a staggered release, more on this in the next section.

:snail: Why a Staggered Release? :snail:

This is the biggest change, so we thought we would tackle this question first. To be completely honest, we don’t see the need of holding back the whole level, just because we want to release it at the same time. Most people don’t study a whole N-level in one day, so why release it in one day?

We wanted to give you all as early access as possible, so that you can start progressing toward your N2 grammar goals! (We plan to release the rest of the N2 grammar in batches of 40 to 50 points at a time over the next month!)

However, I did just mention that the first 50 are currently spread all throughout N2, so how is that helpful? Well that leads me to the next point.

:bar_chart: N2 Grammar Reorder! :bar_chart:

As with other N-levels, we will be reordering N2, so that many similar grammar points come in groups of common themes. This is so that they can be studied together, and hopefully more can be gained out of making comparisons between them. We plan to do this reorder within the next 2 weeks! This is primarily so that those who want to start studying N2 via the Bunpro path don’t need to search around for the grammar points that already have explanations.

This is our proposed new order for N2, and the logic behind it.

Lesson 1 – Possibilities and Intentions

得る、~得ない、ざるを得ない、つもりで、どうせ、せめて、どうやら、より他ない、確かに、一応 ①、一応 ②、に相違ない、万が一、ようがない、に他ならない、っこない、それなら、ものなら、~を~に任せる、活かす、まい

Lesson 2 – Directions and Markers of Following

上、上に、以上、以上に、途中に、中を、を中心に、その上、上は、の下で、後(の)Noun、手前、を巡って、に渡って、に沿って、た末、に従って、に伴って、につき、につけ、にかかわる、に向かって、が気になる、に気を付ける

Lesson 3 – Limitations and Restrictions

も構わず、兼ねる、兼ねない、を除いて、に関わらず、にも関わらず、に限って、に限らず、なお ①、なお ②、限り、次第だ、~てこそ、を問わず、よりしかたがない、に越したことはない、要するに、てからでないと、なくはない、ないことには~ない、ないではいられない、ねばならない、たまえ

Lesson 4 – When or During

~のうち、つつ、つつも、際に、に際して、際に~ない、にあたり、を契機に、つつある、~ところに、か~かのうちに、がけに、ていては、ところだった、ところではない、ぶりに、ては、ては~ては、も又

Lesson 5 – It All Starts or Ends With

結果、て以来、に先立ち、果たして、甲斐がある、軈て、したがって、いよいよ、挙句、きっかけ、にかけては、とっくに、未だに、をもとに、からには、いつの間にか、一旦、はもとより、そうにない

Lesson 6 – For and Against, Through and Without

に反して、逆に、反面、抜く、抜きで、ずに済む、に応じて、を通じて、に応えて、それとも、にしたら、にしても~にしても、としては、としても、それにしても、ぬ、ことなく、にて、には

Lesson 7 – Thoughts and Expressions

思うように、かと思ったら、と言うものでもない、と考えられる、と言う点から考えると、ということは、ふうに、という風に、ものの、というものだ、から見ると、ところをみると、からすると、からして、からといって、そういえば、お~願う、とか、~ようではないか、かのようだ、のではないだろうか

Lesson 8 – It Is The Way It Is

て当然だ、のも当然だ、たった、恐れがある、恐らく、ものか、お負けに、に決まっている、ことになっている、気、げ、ことだから、ものだから、ものですから、ものがある、傾向がある、てしょうがない、だけましだ、幸いなことに、ようでは、さすが、ことは~が

Lesson 9 – Extents and Intervals

更に、精々、僅かに、及び、たちまち、いきなり、といった、を込めて、に加えて、何から何まで、は別として、だけに、だけは、だけあって、何より、何といっても、か何か、てならない、のみならず、それなのに、いわゆる、にすぎない、も~ば~も

Lesson 10 – Whether or Regardless

でしかない、てたまらない、にせよ、何しろ、にしろ~にしろ、はともかく、やら~やら、しかしながら、ことにはならない、だけのことはある、てはならない、てはいられない、しかも、てでも、とも、ない訳にはいかない、と言うわけではない、のももっともだ、たって

Like N5, N4, and N3, we hope that the reordering of N2 will feel more organized, and like there is a specific objective to the lessons!

:running_man: Has Anything Changed? :running_man:

Yes! Actually. Although not immediately obvious, we have started to remove a lot of grammar lingo from the N2 level-writeups. This is not becuase we don’t think it is useful, but because we are planning on moving this ‘structure breakdown’ to the details section in the near future. This will allow the people who want to see it to see it, and the people who don’t want to see it to read the explanation without getting bogged down by all of the technical terms.

Of course, we do however recommend that you continue to examine the details section in the future, as knowing exactly what type of word/particle is being used can be helpful for identifying patterns within the language. Moving this information to the details section is something that will take time, and we plan to do it in the very near future. Not just for N2, but for N3, N4, and N5 as well.

Thanks For the Ongoing Support!

As always, thanks so much for the ongoing support everyone! We have done out best to include as many examples and comparisons that can be found within popular textbooks, while keeping the Bunpro-flavor :tm: in the N2 explanations. We cannot thank you all enough for continually motivating us to create a better product! :shopping:

Hope you all enjoy the rest of your weekend, and have a fantastic Christmas holiday! :christmas_tree:

Thank you guys for your hard work! It’s a great help for my N2 journey.

As for me, studying similar points at the same time actually makes my progress slow because I end up confusing them 🥲

Hopefully the new explanations to go with them help with differentiating the structures .

I’m the opposite, lol.

I find that having similar grammar points together helps me learn and understand the fact that they are similar, as opposed to having them spread out all over and finding that out much later in my studies. That way I can look up videos on YouTube that compare and explain in more detail the differences between said grammar points.

Great Update.
Noticed a write up yesterday and I am super happy about it.
All in all we can see again that you, our beloved bunpro staff, take the feedback in the forums seriously. Keep up the great work!

BTW, any word on when we can expect the vocabulary for N3, N2 and N1? I know BunPro should be more about the grammar, but those vocabulary decks do help. No pressure though, just asking.

This is great timing, thank you guys so much for your hard work! It’s things like this that make me consider getting the lifetime subscription

Heh, I just started my revision for N2 last week. Couldn’t have come at a better time!

And, it’s also a good strategy for the BunPro team themselves, so that they can get feedback as early as possible, and roll out corrections/improvements in a steady, continuous way, as well! Nice strategy, guys!

Great to get this kind of ‘heads-up’ information about BunPro’s current goals like this! Thanks for letting us know!

We have finished N3, and it will be coming soon. The holdup is due to us currently being in the middle of a big overhaul of how vocab works in general. We’ll be announcing more about this change in the very near future!

N2 is also already in development, but can’t give any fixed date yet. :bowing_man:

Very nice! Can’t wait!!

Thanks for all the hard work you guys put into BunPro. I can’t stress enough how much I appreciate it .

Really looking forwards to that
Currently trying another SRS for starting N3 vocab but looking forwards to having grammar and vocab all in one place soon!
I guess the number of vocab must really balloon as you go up the N-levels though, with probably many (tens of?) thousands of vocab by the time you get to N1 :open_mouth:

I love the new vocab decks and cant wait to finish n4 and have the n3 deck already waiting.
Only thing im missing is to have the reviews the other way around too (asking for the japanese word, like anki).
Are there any plans to implement that in the future?

Thanks

Something quite like this will be coming very soon actually! :sunglasses:

I’m so glad to hear that! Will that be for grammar too?
