When viewing my level progress, I see a big negative number.
What can cause negative XP gain?

it means you know a negative amount of Japanese

Your total XP is basically a running total based on the SRS level of all of your items. When you get things wrong, the number goes down, but your account level is essentially a record of your all time best total XP number, so it doesn’t drop.
This is presumably so people can’t game the system by maxing out the same words over and over.
I don’t think I’ve gotten enough items wrong to reduce my XP by over 5000.

Do you happen to know what caused the drop in XP?
Hmm… So the exp bar unfilled itself and the reason is that the total XP and overall level got desynced. I feel like I just saw an analogy of my life.
