New JLPT Scoring System

We finally have a 1:1 official JLPT scoring system with the CERF system. That said, the JLPT test is NOT an official CERF level test. More info in this video:

There’s some further discussion about it here

This is so stupid. CEFR measures output, the JLPT is a multiple choice test that only measures input. You can’t just say “Ok you passed, you’re C1” when there’s no measure of that person’s speaking ability.

The JLPT just became even more of a joke than it already was. What a disappointment. When they first started talking about this it seemed like they were going to start testing for output.

I also thought it was a little pointless. I thought there would be at least some tweaks to the actual test as well.

They do directly address this and make it explicitly clear they are only testing receptive abilities.

It’s a tough one since I can see lots of people, including employers, wanting some sort of CEFR equivalency scale for reference but, equally, it may lead to a lot of test takers misunderstanding what the bit of paper means and claiming a bit too much of their Japanese abilities. Having said that, this does put to bed a lot of arguments about how high or low certain levels are. For the majority of test takers I can also see this extra info having essentially no meaning or consequence at all.

I would personally love to see a modular test, so you could sit just one of listening/reading/kanji writing/speaking/writing. Obviously that would be a more expensive solution and largely impractical to run outside of Japan for the speaking part especially.

It’s definitely going to happen. Soon the internet will have plenty of claims of “I passed C1 after playing eroge for 3 months!”

I’m with James here in the sense that I like the fact that they decided to give an equivalence scale, even if it’s not truly equivalent, just to give students an idea of what level they are compared to other languages. That said, I understand the sentiment of it being a bit pointless since they aren’t testing the same skills.

BTW, sorry for missing the previous thread about this. I rarely come here anymore and the forum didn’t warn me about similar existing threads when I created this, so I thought maybe it didn’t exist.

Unironically, I feel like there’s a decent percentage of Japanese learners who have done exactly that.

I would link the reddit post- but I have a feeling mods might not like that haha.
