New Review Settings Aug 27th 2025

:bunprogold: Hello again folks! :bunprogold:

We’ve got a few mini-updates that give you more fine-grain control on the Quiz and your Reviews!

Apart from the two new Review Types, these come in the form of a bunch more “Advanced” settings at the bottom of the Review Settings page.

:infinity: Master+ Mode

For all our lovely masochistic users, we have added Master+ Mode.

‘Master plus’ – as we’re calling it – is essentially a way to never be done with a Grammar/Vocab in Bunpro. :hocho::smiling_imp:

Setting an item to Master+ makes it so that even after an item reaches Master status (SRS 12), it will continue to show up in your Review Queue at your Master interval (6 months by default).

Items that are of Master+ status will be visually marked like the following:

This is turned Off by default, so you’ll need to go into your settings and turn it on.
You’ll also need to Update All Existing items to be Master+.

NOTE: this can result in a lot of items becoming due at once, so use with caution.

:arrow_forward: New Review Types

We have added the Translate + Reveal & Grade type for Grammar, as well as

The long awaited Listening Review Type!

It acts much like the Listening mode does in Cram, but this time, it’s available for your bread-and-butter SRS Reviews too!

You can set your Reviews to Listening in all of the usual places:

  1. On the individual Grammar/Vocab pages themselves
  2. In the Deck Settings
  3. In the global Review Settings

:speech_balloon: Example Sentences alongside Translation Questions

This one some of you may have seen already, as it’s enabled by default!

For questions with a Translate Review Type (JA → EN), an example sentence is now shown alongside the answer on reveal!

This can be disabled in the Advanced Review Settings, under the title “Display Sentence alongside Translation Questions”.

:leftwards_arrow_with_hook: ‘Undo’ Customization

Also in this Advanced section, we’ve added a place where you can customize how the “Undo” action works during the Quiz.

As the screenshot suggests, you now have two options for the Undo action:

  1. Clear Last Character (new option)
  2. Clear All Characters (old default)

We had a lot of requests for this, so we hope this new option serves you well!

:ghost: Minimum Ghost SRS stage

Another super fine grain control thing, for those that are sick of Ghost-overload for items they’ve just learned.

The title + description says it all:

Minimum SRS For Ghosts:
Choose the minimum SRS level Grammar/Vocab needs to be before Ghost Reviews are created.

This one is also accessed in the Advance section in Reviews Settings.

If you set this setting to “Seasoned 2” for example, any Grammar/Vocab below Seasoned 2 (e.g. Seasoned 1, Adept 3 etc.) won’t produce Ghosts.
Anything above it (Seasoned 3 and up) will produce Ghosts.

NOTE: That the base Ghost settings still apply (Grammar Ghost Reviews / Vocab Ghost Reviews).
E.g. if you have Minimum SRS For Ghosts set to Seasoned 2, and Grammar Ghost Reviews set to Off, then even if you get a Grammar question wong at Seasoned 3, a Ghost won’t be produced.

:woman_teacher:t2: SRS Strictness (Grammar/Vocab split)

A few users asked for this, so we’ve split the SRS Strictness setting into two – one for Grammar and one for Vocab.

:carrot: That’s all folks! :rabbit:

A bunch of pretty minor things in the grand scheme of things, but one that pushes us closer to our goal of letting you have more fine-grain control over your Japanese learning.

Another update like this that allows even bigger choices is on its way!
Stay tuned!

As always, if you have any questions, find any issues with these additions, or have literally anything else, drop a comment below!

We check the forums (perhaps too) regularly.

With love from

I kinda have to push back on this. Like, what’s the point of being a “master” if there’s a “master+” mode? It kinda defeats the entire purpose of “mastering” something, no? Shouldn’t the idea is to not be locked into tutorial hell and allow people the confidence to explore the Japanese language without training wheels.

Like Ryu Hayabusa is a master ninja, but is he a master+ ninja?

It might be an issue where Bunpro might inadvertently turn into Anki, which Anki is already a mess and a half to fiddle with imo.

Overall, I think there’s merit to giving people more options, I just think there needs to be careful consideration for the ramifications of adding them.

SRS for foundation, immersion for flight --maybe it is really as simple as that.

I have a question about the master+ mode. When they come around, will the review sentence be random or will it always be the same last sentence reappearing each time? I love the idea of mastered items coming up as review every six months, but only if the review sentences are randomized.

The minimum SRS for Ghosts is extremely helpful. Thanks a lot!

Love the new listening mode! I was a bit unsure how it works, though, before I tried it  I love that it’s autoplay and shows the full japanese sentence with the important part marked as usual after pressing show answer. Sadly I have to press hint to get the full translation for the sentence, so it’s not really a listening mode ontop of a reading mode, but that’s nice enough

Bunpro keeps throwing me carrots :carrot:
I’m a happy bunny :rabbit:

By the way, do Master+ reviews give any XP / B-points?

Hi! Thanks a lot for the new undo action setting! But there seems to be some bug. Since I’ve set it to “clear last character”, now every time I hit enter after correctly answering a question (to go to the next review), the input field of that next question is pre-filled with my answer from the previous review, minus the last two characters :D.

Great update! Will make use of some of these new options. Thanks for all the great work.

They will give you Buncoin but no XP! :carrot:

Fixed!
Glad you’re enjoying the change.

With the master+ mode, if I turn it on will I end up with hundreds of reviews? (As you said its a lot)

Is there any way to have them staggered added to my review queue? EG maybe only 1-2 extra day?

Also I think this might be a thing already but I can’t see the option for it, are we able to show what JLPT level a grammar point is from? It would be crucial if a user hasn’t seen a grammar point in over a year that they know at minimum what level its coming from, rather then trying to cycle through every grammar point they can think of by brute force (EG, such as cycling 'Even If’s)

I only just realised listening questions were a thing… Oh dear, that is painful

One of the best updates!
I really wanted “Master+ Mode” like Anki because I was afraid I would forget some old words that I mastered using WaniKani sync. Six months is a good length.

And the example for vocab “Translation review” is very helpful. Now it is like Anki too, and I don’t need to use “Reading review” for examples. I hope it gives random sentences every time and not the same sentence for one word.

Thank you very much.
