Non JMDict bilingual dictionaries (JP-EN)?

Looking for any JP>EN dictionaries that don’t use any material from JMDict.

Online, it seems crushingly rare. Mobile app-wise, most I see (Android) are just frontends for JMDict, or worse, coding projects that mash JMDict+ an LLM with a pretty bow. I’d be up to try a physical dictionary, if need be, but I’m not sure which ones might be worth a hoot. And plus Amazon reviews haven’t been trust worthy in like a decade, and book reviews are terrible even worse because half the time the review doesn’t even review the actual book.

Monokakido and Logovista sell a bunch of really good dictionaries as in app purchases. On iOS/MacOS, you can share purchased dictionaries across all your devices.

I use 新和英大辞典 a lot since it tends to be more thorough with definitions and examples. But it’s always nice to have other dictionaries to use for cross referencing. Monokakido has a better user interface.

As far as physical dictionaries go, I liked Obunsha’s Sunrise Dictionary. It’s intermediate level. It uses stars for word frequency and has example sentences in Japanese and English. It’s out of print, but you can get it used.
