Shizuoka Prefecture
Hamamatsu Gyoza 浜松餃子
Hamamatsu City in Shizuoka is famous for its Gyoza, small dumplings with a meat and vegetable filling. Decided by the Hamamatsu Gyoza Society (no, I’m not making that up!), To truly be a Hamamatsu gyoza, it must have been made within Hamamatsu by someone who has lived there for three years or more. They are generally served with a generous helping of bean sprouts and go well with chilli oil, white vinegar and soy sauce.
Eel 鰻
Eel is very popular in Shizuoka, usually on rice. However, I’m going to use this segment to tell you about Shizuoka’s famous souvenir, eel pie. This is my favourite souvenir in all of Japan, a sweet, crispy pastry covered in a sugary coating. Now… I always thought that the name was because they are in the vague shape of an eel, which is true, but what I didn’t realise until eating them for a couple of years, is that they actually have eel in them! I can’t taste it but hey ho, it’s a fun fact.
Izutakahara Beer 伊豆高原ビール
Made with 100% barley malt, this beer has been brewed in Shizuoka for 25 years and is loved by the locals! They have their own restaurant in Shizuoka, where you can drink the beer with various foods that the beer serves as a good accompaniment to. It’s famous for its kaisendon (fresh fish rice bowl).
