OK, we made it to Kagawa Prefecture. Welcome to the island of Shikoku!

Kagawa Prefecture

Sanuki Udon 讃岐うどん

From personal experience, I can tell you that if you tell any Japanese person that you have been to Kagawa Prefecture, the first word that will leave their lips is “UDON!!” These are objectively (feel free to prove me wrong) the most delicious noodles in Japan. A unique shape, they have corners, almost like a square tube. They are served as they are and dipped into a dashi (thin fish sauce, more like a soup); also, they go very well with tempura.

Mochi Zoni あんもち雑煮

A zoni is a miso soup eaten to celebrate New Year, with various things including mochi, another food associated with New Year. This one, famous in Kagawa Prefecture, is famous for also having sweet red bean paste in, for a unique, sweet taste. It is also famous for its white colour, since it is made with a white miso.

Olives オリーブ

Not a great deal to say about this one since we all know what olives are, but they were imported to Japan from Europe in the Meiji and Edo periods and the olive plant has since become the emblem of Kagawa Prefecture. It is also the official tree of the prefecture… Yes, I know prefectures have an official everything, I didn’t know about the prefectural tree thing until I was researching for this article but hey ho there you go…

@matt_in_mito Thank you for making my Genki II exercises about travel & dining plans more interesting for my weekly Japanese class. Sensei and another native Japanese volunteer tutor there were really impressed that they thought I should be their travel guide in Japan

Of course, if they’re serious - I’ll just tell them to contact you instead :+1:
