Morioka Sandaimen 盛岡三大麺

Sandaimen is the term used to describe the three most famous noodle dishes of Iwate Prefecture: wanko soba (わんこそば), reimen (冷麺) and jajamen (じゃじゃ麺). The special feature of wanko soba is that it is eaten in bite-sized amounts with various condiments for a different taste in each mouthful. According to the official web site, depending on the shop/restaurant, around 15 bowls would be the same amount as a normal helping of soba. Reimen is eaten cold. Soft, chewy noodles and a beef and chicken stock is used for the soup. It can be enjoyed with seasonal vegetables, eggs and kimchi. Jajamen is stir-fried udon made with ginger, garlic, vinegar and chilli oil, and is apparently the most addictive of the three!

Bindon 瓶丼

As I have already introduced, a “don” or “donburi” is a bowl of rice with a topping. This novel product gives you your toppings in a bottle! The bottle comes beautifully presented with the topping forming layers. It seems a shame to eat something that could easily be an ornament, but you won’t be able to resist in the end!

Fukuda Bread 福田パン

This bakery is so well-known in Iwate that everyone knows it, and their products are even sold in local supermarkets. If you go directly to the shop itself, you can choose from a huge variety of fillings and they will make your own individual product in front of you. Try it with some meat, fish, vegetables, or even some sweet red bean paste and matcha filling.
