Well done everyone.
Here’s a few tips for you… things you should NEVER do with chopsticks in Japan:

  1. NEVER stand your chopsticks up in your rice. The reason is that it this symbolises a bridge between this world and the afterlife. It is used as a way of serving rice to deceased loved ones, usually after collection of their ashes. Doing this in a restaurant is unthinkably rude.

  2. NEVER pass food from your chopsticks to someone else’s. This is also connected to death. After someone has been cremated, their ashes are transferred by loved ones into the urn using chopsticks that are made especially for transporting human bone tissue. Passing food from your chopsticks to someone else’s chopsticks symbolises this and is therefore taboo.
  3. NEVER pick up your food by stabbing it with one chopstick. This one isn’t connected with death but is extremely bad manners. Chopsticks are used in many Buddhist rituals (don’t ask me about them, I don’t know) and it is considered disrespectful to Buddha. Furthermore, traditionally, chopsticks are viewed as beautiful things that should be respected. If you can’t pick your food up the correct way with your chopsticks, you’re using the wrong ones!
