I am pretty sure this (the picture) is not cod roe, but roe from red fish, probably salmon or trout. The taste and looks are actually pretty different. Cod roe has way smaller eggs and are darker, while salmon roe is more orange and is bigger. Cod roe has a more intense fishy taste, which I can agree often gets too intense. Salmon roe on the other hand has a more delicate flavor and is not as fishy. I like salmon roe way better! Cod roe is often used things like mashed potatoes, yakisoba and onigiri and is much cheaper, and therefore (unfortunately) used more than salmon roe.

The roe from cod, pollock and coalfish (white fish) is often called タラコ (鱈子 cod-children :O) and salmon and trout (red fish) roe is called むクラ for some reason.

Sorry for the β€œlate” reply btw, I was looking through the post again in order to remember more!

Oh and to add a bit, 明ε€ͺ子 (γ‚γ‚“γŸγ„γ“) can be commonly seen, which is pollock roe. This is usually in the form of θΎ›εζ˜Žε€ͺ子 (γ‹γ‚‰γ—γ‚γ‚“γŸγ„γ“), where it is prepared with chili and salt. However, it gets confusing because I have seen this and cod roe, タラコ, been used interchangeably.
