OUR BIGGEST RACE YET! A Gourmet Race Around Japan

Since this started on the 21st and I haven’t posted yet, it’s fine if I add all my reviews since then, right?

Looks like the sum of my reviews since the 22nd is exactly 250!

Morning! Sorry for being a little late. We’ve earned enough money for our ticket to Aomori so let’s enjoy their food!

Aomori Prefecture

Bara Yaki バラ焼き
This is a dish whereby ribs are soaked in soy sauce, then fried with onions, then eaten in a sweet and spicy sauce. It is primarily made with beef, but is also made with other meats, such as pork, lamb, and horse meat. It can be enjoyed with rice or simply on its own as a snack. This is easy to make, wherever you are in the world, so why not give it a try? Just remember to leave the meat soaking in the fridge in soy sauce for at least an hour before you cook it.

Black Garlic 黒にんにく
But garlic is white! How did they make it black? Surely, it’s full of chemicals or weirdly genetically engineered or something…
Nope. This garlic, distinctively sweeter to white garlic, is made simply by aging normal white garlic in a very humid atmosphere, for many weeks. It’s also nutritious, as Aomori’s cold climate creates a perfect environment for nutrients in the soil under the snow. It can be added to sauces, stews and curries for that extra little kick.

Sea Cucumber なまこ
Not particularly attractive to look at, but this Aomori speciality is a hit with its people. They can be found on the sea bed surrounding most of Aomori Prefecture and are eaten as an accompaniment, especially to alcohol. Surprisingly, you can also get sea cucumber tea! In old Japanese, sea cucumbers were called ‘ko’, so the raw version is now called ‘namako’.
