Happy Setsubun! I’m sure there will be someone on here who can go into way more detail about the traditions than I can, so I won’t embarrass myself on that front, but I will tell you about the food. The traditional food to be eaten (and thrown!) today is beans. They come in all kinds of shapes and sizes, both sweet and savoury. Another is sardines, we had them at school today and there were loads left over because not all the students like them. They were deep-fried with breadcrumbs and were delicious!
But my personal favourite is the eho-maki. This long tube containing 7 ingredients (it has to be 7) and has to be eaten facing a certain direction depending on the year (this year is south southwest) and must be eaten silently all in one to warn off demons. I had two this year, a seafood one from my local supermarket and a chicken nanban one from my local izakaya. Kampai!
