We made it to Miyazaki!
Miyazaki Prefecture
Chicken Namban チキン南蛮
Chicken namban is a delicious dish of fried chicken covered with tartar sauce. Not the tartar sauce you’re used to though - it is freshly made with eggs. People who follow this race closely know that my regular izakaya is a Miyazaki-style place. Back in July, they made five variations of the tartar sauce: red hot, tomato and basil, curry, pickle, and red ginger. They were all absolutely amazing.
Meat-Wrapped Rice Ball 肉巻きおにぎり
Anyone who has ever been to Japan knows that the rice ball is an everyday food item that the vast majority of people eat on a regular basis. Most of them are wrapped in nori seaweed, but many just come as they are, not wrapped in anything. Miyazaki Prefecture’s famous food, however, is a rice ball wrapped in pork, with a soy sauce-based sweet sauce. Pick it up with a lettuce leaf and eat it as it is!
Hyuganatsu 日向夏
In ancient times, Miyazaki Prefecture was called Hyuga, so this citrus fruit is named after that. They are about the same size as an average orange, but more sour and lighter in colour. They can be eaten sprinkled with sugar to take the edge off the bitterness, or of course, juiced to make a refreshing summer drink. It’s difficult to place the taste, but I would personally place it somewhere between a grapefruit and a lemon, although that’s not really accurate enough to define the unique taste.
Fun fact: The second picture of each of these is from my wonderful local izakaya, 塚田農場! Therefore, the pictures themselves may not have been taken in Miyazaki Prefecture!
Only two more stops to go until the end of the race! Are you as excited as I am??
Next stop: Kagoshima! We need 5,060 yen for this ticket, so our next target is 242,360. LET’S GO!
