We’ve got our ticket to Akita! Let’s enjoy some of their local food!

Akita Prefecture

Inaniwa Udon 稲庭うどん
Akita’s famous udon, with over 350 years of history, has been available commercially since 1972, when the recipe was released. The noodles are made from wheat, and are handmade over the course of days; the aging process alone is four days. It is very light and smooth, and chewy. It is usually eaten simply in a light soup, with only a few toppings, so as not to take the flavour away from the noodles. Of course, you can have tempura as a side dish!

Kiritampo きりたんぽ
Whilst Akita’s rice is known as some of the most delicious in Japan, this rice snack is probably the most so. It is famous in Odate, which is actually the hometown of my best friend (as featured in my profile picture). Cooked rice is beaten until it becomes elastic (mochi-mochi in Japanese) and wrapped around a skewer. It is delicious when grilled over charcoal, as you get the wonderful barbecue taste, but it’s also delicious in a Japanese hot pot (nabe) with soup, vegetables and a meat of your choice.

Hinai Chicken 比内地鶏
One of the most delicious and most revered kinds of chicken in Japan. I’m very lucky to say that I’ve eaten this chicken myself, and it really tastes very much like chicken – by which I mean, it’s actually really tasty, unlike something you might buy from a supermarket. It is delicious in all sorts of dish, but the one I personally experienced was in an “oyako don” (literally a parent and child bowl, which sounds a bit grizzly), which is a rice bowl with chicken, egg (hence the parent and child) and stock.

Opps I made a mistake when I copied and pasted from Souzooka. So adding their 4 back in. (Not THAT big of a deal, but still… haha)

21 277 (community total) + 4 (Souzooka’s reviews) = 21 261
