We’ve got our ticket to Fukushima! Let’s go!
Fukushima Prefecture
Kitakata Ramen 喜多方ラーメン
Kitakata ramen is one of the main three ramens in Japan, along with Sapporo, where we started our race, and Hakata, which is a very long way off! It is made with a soy sauce base, with soy sauce from Kitakata in Fukushima Prefecture. It features chewy, flat noodles and has a delicate taste. An unusual feature of this ramen is that there is a tradition of eating it in the morning.
Dengaku 田楽
Dengaku is traditionally made with tofu, but can be made with any meat or vegetable. It is traditionally cooked over a charcoal fire and is covered with a special sauce, containing red miso, sugar and condiments. It is known as a simple country food that warms the heart with nostalgia.
Inawashiroji Beer 猪苗代地ビール
For our first drink of the race, we are going to try some Inawashiroji beer. This multiple-award-winning beer comes in five distinct varieties.
Pilsner - a strong beer with both bitter and aromatic hops
Weizen - a fruity white beer made with wheat and barley malt
Golden Angel - a reddish, mellow beer that has a refreshing smell
Brown Weizen - an aromatic, fruity beer with a savoury, roast taste
Rauch - an aromatic black beer with a very strong, sweet taste
This beer has been produced since 1997 and you can visit their museum, as well as their beer restaurant, where you can sample the beers and eat sausages that complement them.
OK so it’s time to say goodbye to the Tohoku region of Japan and head into Kanto. Our ticket from Fukushima to Utsunomiya, the capital of Tochigi Prefecture, costs 6,450 yen, so we will have to get to 43,070 to find out about their famous foods. Let’s go!
36852 (community total) + 115 (my reviews) = 36967
I’m really gonna have to pull my finger out for the Kanto region. It’s only a few hundred yen between some of the stations here, so the writeups will come thick and fast.
Another reminder to people who are either new to this thread, or haven’t read my previous message regarding this, if you have spent time in, or lived in a prefecture that I haven’t and know about the local specialities, please get in touch! I know a lot about Japanese food culture but I haven’t been everywhere so any first-hand knowledge would be very well-received.
36967 (community total) + 28 (my reviews) = 36995
36 995 (community total) + 23 (my reviews) = 37 018
37 018 (community total) + 45 (my reviews) = 37 063
37_063 + 30 of the finest reviews pulled from the depths of my brain whilst pulling a contorted face = 37_093
