Nagai Shokudo Motsuni 永井食堂もつ煮
In this very famous restaurant in Gunma Prefecture, the speciality is offal boiled in a deep-flavoured and sweet miso soup. Promising to never use frozen offal, they exclusively use small intestine for the soft texture and this is mixed with konnyaku, a relatively flavourless vegetable so as not to interfere with the overall taste, but to add texture.
Yaki Manju 焼きまんじゅう
These manju buns are very popular in Gunma and are known as a soul food. They are placed on a skewer before being barbecued, then pasted with a generous helping of miso. Unlike most skewered foods in Japan, the Gunma style is not to eat directly from the skewer, but to remove them and eat them one-by-one with chopsticks.
Mizusawa Udon 水沢うどん
One of the most famous udons in Japan, Mizusawa udon is delicious and should be eaten with a light sauce to appreciate the taste of the noodles. That said, it is versatile and can be eaten with a range of sauces and soups. It is, like all udon, a perfect partner with tempura, and even a little sake if you’re not driving!
