Peeking at answers? [Poll]

When you get an answer completely wrong and it fully shows up in red, do you reveal the answer before moving on? Or do you move on and try it again without help?

On one hand, I find that revealing it turns it into a memory game but it lets me go through my reviews faster. On the other hand, Bunpro’s description of the answer isn’t always super clear, especially for some vocab with unique nuance, but coming up with the answer yourself is more rewarding.

I personally just clear the answer and keep trying until I get it right, then retype my first guess so it marks it wrong.

If answering it wrong immediately reminds me what I did wrong, then I’ll just move on and answer it properly when it comes up. Otherwise I’ll reveal either cause I need to know, or I need to check if I actually should have gotten it right, but have a typo or something.

I almost always reveal the answer but I also have a very huge review queue so it’s kind of a necessity

Always reveal the answer and reread the explanation when I get it wrong. Memorization and understanding go hand in hand.

I don’t see any value in not revealing it. I’m here to learn. If I get the answer wrong, I clearly don’t know it and I need to review.

the only time i dont reveal it is when its just on the tip of my tongue and i think ill have it by the time it comes back around for wrap up

I usually reveal the answer because I can’t keep up with the reviews otherwise, I find Bunpro does a pretty nice job of not giving it back to you immediately (like I think Wanikani does for example).

The only exception is when I have a moment where it comes to me the second I’ve gotten it wrong, which happens frustratingly more than I would like haha.

But actually after seeing this post I might try looking at the answer less and see how that feels.

If I am absolutely blanking on the answer I reveal it and move on.

Most of the time, if I get a question wrong, it’s actually because I don’t know the answer anymore. I need to check what the correct answer is in order to jog my memory. It’s not going to come back to me just by seeing the same sentence during wrap-up.

This was way more skewed than I thought!

While it’s true you should definitely know where you went wrong or if you were close, I think it’s quite fun to rack your brain sometimes and be like “what have I learned that could apply to this?”. Feels great to get it right (or at least close) and you recall that effort later when it comes up again in another review. I encourage trying this out from time to time!

The majority of the time, my wrong answers are either from:
a) Not knowing the correct answer and needing to guess, or just filling in any answer so that I can get it marked wrong and get the right answer
b) Being sure in my answer and wrong.
c) Being sure in my answer, and technically correct, but remembering the spelling wrong
d) Being right on the edge of the right answer, and remembering the right answer shortly after answering wrong.

Situation D is the only time I don’t reveal. The rest of the time, there is some misunderstanding that I need to correct, and while trying to guess may eventually get me there, I’d prefer to simply know what I got wrong and move forward.

For what it’s worth, I will typically spend a good amount of time thinking before I guess or give up. So by the time I’ve entered an incorrect answer, I’m usually pretty darn sure that I won’t get it right.
