Post-review cram seems to repeat identical questions

I’ve seen this a couple times now. My post-review cram has maybe 30 questions. And maybe 3 concepts (i.e. lessons) that it’s covering. But for 1 of the concepts, it just repeats the same question multiple times. E.g. it’s a verb conjugation exercise, and the same sentence with the same verb gets reused. Maybe that’s intentional in some cases. E.g. I kept getting a past conjugation of 行く wrong, since it was an exception to the rule. So it doesn’t surprise me that I’d be repeatedly grilled on that specific verb. But other times I just generally got a conjugation pattern for a Godan verb wrong, and it seems like it would have made more sense to give me multiple Godan verbs with different endings in the review, to really solidify my understanding. Not sure how to more quantitatively describe this; hopefully I’m not imagining it.

I’m not exactly sure what you’re describing.

How are you setting up your post-Review Crams?
Can you please send me a screenshot of one of the summaries with all the answered Qs?

Sorry for the vagueness, I realize that was not great as a bug report. Was mostly just curious if others had noticed a similar thing.

I haven’t changed anything about cram settings, I just press the “cram missed items” button if I see it after a review.

I’ll provide a better report with a screenshot next time this occurs, thanks!

How exactly do I get to the cram settings? I can’t seem to find any in the mobile app.

I realize this message is similarly vague as before, but… I’m in the middle of another very long cram session where I believe things are getting repeated. I was just long overdue on grammar and had about 50 items to review. I got only 70% correct, and when I accepted the cram challenge at the end, I got assigned 90 cram questions. I’m only a quarter of the way through them, and I’ve already seen identical repeats, I think. If I make it through all 90 before this happens, I’ll send a post-cram screenshot. Unless the screenshot you were asking for before was post-review.

Are you primarily on Android?
Have you ever used the web interface, and if so do you get the same bugs?

Web and mobile share some internal logic, but sometimes they don’t (i.e. resulting in Android-specific bugs).

Yes, I use the Android app exclusively.

I’ve never done a review session on the web, but I just checked the settings on the website as well for good measure, and I still can’t find any configuration options for the post-review crams like you asked about earlier. Which would be a nice thing if they did exist, because even forgetting for a moment about my main issue with questions repeating in a cram session, there’s a separate (more subjective) issue of cram sessions being too long. Like above, I mentioned that out of 50 review questions, I got ~15 wrong, and then the cram session it assigned was ~90 questions! I would definitely prefer a smaller multiplier.

But back to the primary topic, I did finally complete the 90 questions, and I was able to find proof of a repeat.

Can you please send me a screenshot of one of the summaries with all the answered Qs?

It would require probably more than a dozen screenshots to show the entire list. But below is one screenshot from that 90-question cram session I just mentioned. You can see a repeat just in the 7 that are visible there. I scrolled through the entire list and found quite a few others.

It is just a part of bunpro, I get like 2-3 different reviews for example for the grammar なくてはいけない and so on. It is the same for all the other grammar reviews that you will encounter, which is quite a shame. Because at some point you will know what to write just based on the sentence alone and not neccesarily because you remember the grammar rules for that specific one.

But it doesn’t have to be. There are 12 examples here, many of which I did not see in that cram session. There’s no reason my cram session needed to have repeats, and it would be trivial to fix this.

Agreed as a general issue, the limited size of the question sets can be a problem. And I’d love to see them expanded in the future, but that is probably a massive effort, and I can live with them the way they are. I just wish that if a single practice session was reaching into a bag of 12 things, it would not do repeats within that same session.

The feature I’m referring to is after a Review session (not after a Cram Session), if you got any questions wrong, it lets you Cram all the Missed items only (the things you got wrong).

This should exist on the mobile app.

I feel like maybe we’re talking about different things?

Re your issues with seeing previously answered questions – that’s a fair point.
Ideally we’d have something opposite to “No Spoilers” mode (pictured).
Maybe call it “Only Spoilers” mode?

Me too! That’s why the title of the post is “post-review cram session”. Apologies if I did not explain that clearly enough inside of the post.

This should exist on the mobile app.

Yep, it does exist. That is how I initiate my post-review cram sessions, I push the button about cramming N missed items. In my case, N was around 15 (30% of the 50 items in my review session), but the post-review session:

  • had 90 items (a minor issue, seems like a lot for only 15 missed items)
  • had many repeats (a major issue and the point of my post)

We are talking about the same thing, and I start my crams as you showed. But I still don’t know how to answer your earlier question “how are you setting up your post-review crams”? Since I am not aware of any place that I can configure such settings.

Sounds like an issue with the default settings for the Mobile app.
Will pass this on!

Mobile app developer here, I am looking into this issue.
Will make sure to patch it for next weeks update.

Thanks so much!

Are there “non-default” settings for the web app? You asked earlier how I was configuring my post-review crams, but I can’t find any sort of configuration options (either on Android or web). Apologies if I’m sounding like a broken record repeating that Q, but if there is any way for me to configure this on my own, then it would help me out a lot.

Good news, I found the issue.
Will be released with the patch next week.
