Pun Cards

I have a weakness for 歌ガルタ, the Karuta card game where players identify the poem being read and grab for the one that has the other half of the poem. I love to watch the championships, and I think many of the poems are pretty great too. Also, I like how the chanting sounds is so much like the chanting of Rikishi names before a sumo match.

So I found myself an old set in for a pretty good price on Ebay. But while I was looking for those, I found that there have been many more versions of Karuta than I realized, even ones with lines from Ghibly movies. So, I ordered myself a deck of pun cards.

I was a little worried that the pun cards might be too tough for me, but they are not. They are really fun puns, right at my learning level, and delightful.

I recall all of the word games and such that went into learning my first language. It is great to be ready to use similar games to expand my fluency in my second language.

The original 百人一首 (hyakunin isshu Karuta, one poem each by 100 ancient poets ) is loaded with puns too. Japanese language really loans itself to punning, because all of the homophones. The translation by Peter Macmillan is particularly good, because he talks about the puns and double meanings.

I need this! I love the あるみかん joke and I first read it in Space Brothers.

However I don’t really think this place is the appropriate forum for talking about this. Might I point you in the direction of the PunPro forums…

I’ll see myself out.
