Please could someone explain to me why in the following sentence, it is くれるって instead of くれて。
あの人は僕に小さい子犬をくれるって。
Am probably being a bit dim, but am baffled. Thanks!

On the surface this seems to be a quotation って (JLPT N5) | Bunpro
“That person said that he/she will give me a puppy”.
Does that not fit within the context?
