Question about vocabulary in Bunpro Reading Passages

Hi there!

I have a question regarding the vocabulary necessary to fully understand the reading passages. As an example, I recently started the passages marked as N5. Since I just finished both the Vocabulary and Grammar N5 Bunpro decks, I kind of assumed that the passages for N5 would be simple enough that I could understand them. And I can, for the most part.

Im noticing, though, that some of these include vocabulary and grammar points I haven’t studied yet. When I looked up the ones I wasn’t familiar with, they show up in the Bunpro content section as N4 or lower.

I guess my question is, is this normal? Sometimes I feel the need to click on the “Show All Translations” button because of a word or phrase I don’t know yet, and it feels like I’m cheating.

Don’t worry, it’s just a part of learning. You are expected to read the passages at ease, not knowing every single word used in the passages. It’s applicable for all levels. In addition, having the chance to come across words you don’t know yet is actually a good thing. Don’t pressure yourself too much. If you want to see if you have already reached the N5 level or not, you can try to do the mock JLPT exams on Bunpro to test your knowledge.

A big part of learning to read will be becoming okay with the ambiguity of not knowing words/interpreting from context. If you’re in proper study mode when doing these reading passages, a great way to go about it is to read the whole passage start to finish without looking anything up, marking words that you don’t recognize along the way, skimming a second time to see what words you can fill in through context, and then finally translating words you couldn’t figure out
