Why can’t you use 訳ありの here? I know that stylistically it’s better to not chain too many のs together but does it change the meaning or make it grammatically incorrect here? Is it because leaving out the の softens the “defectiveness”?
Just the の chaining more than anything else. Also adding の would make it seem more like a limited group of products that are damaged/discounted, without the の is seems more like all of the products at that store are damaged/discounted.

I’m still having a hard time with this, how does that apply to this one? Wanna make sure I actually understand it instead of memorizing these on a case-by-case basis.
In this case they are linked because it is a title ‘a couple with a complicated past’. That is the nickname/moniker that has been applied to them. Inserting a の would take away the nuance of the nickname being specific to this particular couple.
