Question regarding the placement of 何 + (Counter) + か

何冊かの本が山のように床に積もれていた。

What’s the difference in meaning or nuance when 何 + (Counter) + か is placed before or after the noun? Does the first sentence mean “some of the athletes” while the second just means “some books”?

The difference is out of verse some, like you pointed out.

The first implies that there are a groups of athletes and some of them lost.

The second says there are some things that happen to be books piled on the floor.

In that case this grammar acts analogously to how some is used the previous sentences.
