Reading for grammar you already know

Heya,

I was wondering, how many of you are still reading the supplemental material for grammar points you already know everything about?

For example, I have a very basic understanding of Japanese going into BunPro, and understand things like the て-form, most common particles, ます form, etc.
I think I know everything there is to know about them, and so far I seem to be correct there. However, I am afraid that some of my knowledge might be more limited than assumed, so I might be missing out of some important nuances or uses if I don’t go through all of them.
I kind of went wild unfortunately and already went through 48 review items, so that would be quite a gargantuan task…:sweat_smile:

Anyway back to the general question, do you read supplemental grammar points if you think you already got the gist?

For me, it depends on the grammar point (or my mood). With 12 example sentences, I think they attempt to put in special circumstance examples so I tend to read those first before exploring further.

I prefer books but Maggie Sensei has been a great resource too but takes a while to read through. The ungrammatical examples in DBJG/DIJG have been really helpful too. I think nuances take time. Even if I can successfully run a grammar point, a native might tell me “I know what you are saying, but we don’t exactly say it like that”…:man_facepalming:

Yes! I was living in Japan for well over a year before starting Bunpro, both as an exchange student and as a worker. I had been in the country, speaking Japanese for a total of about 18 months before I realised the difference between ~まで and ~までに - this was thanks to BunPro and reading the supplemental materials. This is N5 stuff and I’m N2, but because it’s a small difference, the people around me never bothered correcting me - but obviously going forward into the future, it’s going to be necessary to know.
That’s just one example but there are many more when I have had a light bulb moment and said “Ahh I never realised that up until now! I can’t believe I was always missing that simple point!”
